Look behind you

Glen was sweating and breathing heavily. He had been running for minutes, non-stop, scared out of his mind and running for his life. He had a shotgun, but just could seem to hit anything fast enough to slow them down.

He could hear grunting, and the sound of feet landing after a leap. The fiend was still on his trail. As it came closer, he braced himself. Then he jumped around the corner and fired his shotgun three times in rapid succession. The beast gave a soft groan, and sigh, as it flew through the air, and then landed in a heap at Glen’s feet.

He breathed a sigh of relief. One down, but he knew many more were still in the area. He was shaking. It was mildly exhilarating, but knowing that more were around made him feel sick.

He heard a moan come from behind. He shouted in surprise as he turned to face zombie. He fired a shot by reflex, hitting it in the hip. I flinched and moaned, but kept coming. Behind it were more. “Oh shit oh shit oh shit!” he whimpered as he ran back down the hallway in the direction he had been running from the fiend.

He turned and fired back into the crowd, but missed and hit the sole light in the hallway. It strobed wildly, making the entire run down the hallway surreal. The moans continued behind him as he ran. He paused for just a second. He would have sworn he heard more moans from the front.

He looked around in a panic. He was trapped. He could just make out the silhouettes of more zombies coming down the hall from the front.

Glen noticed something he hadn’t seen before. From the floor to his right, it looked like a small amount of light was spilling from underneath a door. He could not see the shape of a door, but there was definitely something there. He pulled his flashlight and hit the wall. There was a clink as the metal of the flashlight hit the wall, then a small “woosh”. A section of the wall pulled away from him, and then slid out of the way. It was a door!

Glen hurried through, and then searched the small room in front of him. There was a box of shotgun shells, and a flack vest sitting on a wooden table. He was filled with relief. Before he picked anything up, he looked around to see if there was a way to close the door. A lever was on the wall next to it, so he pulled it. The door he had just entered slid shut.

“Sweet…” he said quietly. He turned back to the table to retrieve the shells and armor. He froze.

Standing right in front of him was a large creature, taller than him, and covered in smooth, green skin, stretched over bulky, corded muscles. It had no eyes, but was mostly human shaped. It had a wide, lipless mouth filled with pointed, interlocking teeth.

He screamed an unintelligible string of gibberish as he began firing the shotgun wildly. He hit the floor, overcorrected and shot over the thing’s shoulder, then shot the ceiling. The lever had closed one door and opened another.

Glen was red-faced and foaming as he screamed “God damn it, die you ugly fucker!”

The creature began swinging at him, hitting him over and over, slamming Glen back and preventing him from aiming. One last blow cut across Glen’s face and he fell to the floor, dead. He found himself staring at the creature’s feet, sideways, and a loud, continuous beep filled the room.

Glen pushed back his chair and threw his headphones across the room. “SHIT!” he bellowed. He had borrowed this game form a friend two weeks ago and had not made much progress. He kept getting scared and overreacting. “Fucking piece of shit computer! If I had a better one I’d be able to beat this”

Glen’s rant ended with a wet “Thunk!” he slumped forward, his head slamming onto his keyboard and inadvertently restarting his most recently saved game. Within seconds, his onscreen persona was once again getting ripped to pieces by a monster, while Glen lay face-down on his keyboard with the clawed end of a hammer sticking out of the top of his head.

His wife looked at his lifeless body in disgust. “I told you two god damn weeks ago to give that back.” She had told him repeatedly to quit screaming at the computer or she was going to kill him. He had done the same thing with six other games over the past year.

Finally, she had some peace and quiet.
