The Titan Arrives
Ha, I found one.
What I refer to is a Titan stick insect. I believe this one is female, and it's about the body length of my fore-arm. Here's one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVu30...eature=related The one I found is a little older maybe...perhaps not just as long, with a thicker body. My cat was climbing up the inside of my flyscreen, smart cat, we're on level 3...the girl pulled him down and saw it...I kind've butchered the flyscreen a little, reached out and grabbed it. They're not really "family" bugs, in fact aside from sticking to the same food sources and occasional mating they don't really have any contact with eachother so I felt alright in doing this, knowing that I could give it a home free from predators, feed it the right things etc. Now as I've said before, I have another insect called a Spiny Leaf insect (As seen in Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom, the "door handle inside hole" scene, and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5GKVIG3X6M though mine is MUCH bigger than both of these) This is a pretty close relative. In fact they're just about as close a relative as there can be. They eat much the same thing, they grow from nymphs that both disguise themselves as ants, the females both asexually reproduce other females, they show the same signs of stress, they both have wings they don't really use which means evolution-wise they're about the same age, they both usually hang upside down, and they're both completely harmless. I've noticed (the videos and pics won't show this) that their feet are EXACTLY the same. Little sticky pads between two hooked claws. The heads look very similar too, the only difference being the small horn type things on the leaf. I am going to introduce them to eachother after things have settled a little, hopefully they'll become something akin to friends...if not I'm pretty sure they'll at very least ignore eachother. This gives me incentive to make a larger enclosure. I'll take some pics in time. Facts: The family or order is known as Phasmatodea, or Phasmids. They are basically the vegitarian version of Mantids/Mantodea/Mantis, and split only by this order, very close indeed. So yeah, just thought I'd share, hope it wasn't a completely boring read. - B
