I hated Martyrs as I've said elsewhere I do not recommend it at all.

Besides that "I Spit On Your Grave"(original), "Salo", "The Holy Mountain" and "The Devils" are brutal but have plenty of substance to them. What I like is that they aren't afraid to push things too far yet you could write a huge dissertation on them.

Sounds more like an exploitation film, rather than horror.
It is a documentary about the realities of life as a soldier in Afganistan. It is not horror, though it is brutal. The movie caused quite a stir as we up here in Scandinavia like to pretend that we are not part of any war and that what our troops are doing is just smiling and handing out cookies, people did not like to face the realities.

Ichi the Killer has a fair amount of brutality and is also an excellent movie. I'd recommend that one.

I watched the trailer for Psychology of a Knife and it looked pretty appalling.

I've already mentioned Irreversible.

Grotesque - the one from Japan is brutal as fuck..Also the August underground films..

Hostel 2 is up there can't believe I seen that in a shitty Irish cinema uncut. John Rambo is crazy brutal for a main stream Holliwood film too.

I have heard some good things about Audition, especially the ending scene. And when we are talking of ending scenes, In The Realms Of The Senses you have a rather brutal ending.

Inside is pretty well done. Not much of a storyline at all, but it's enough. Well worth watching, but not for the squeamish at all.

Martyrs starts off really strong, but dies about half-way through. The whole premise is actually retarded if you take at least 10 seconds to think about it. I won't ruin it for you, but naming the movie Martyrs makes about as much sense as if they called it Pink Fluffy Avocados. Seriously. Just like there are no pink fluffy avocados in the movie, there are no martyrs either so it makes absolutely no sense. It's well done, but the plotline really ends up feeling like a very last minute brainfart attempt at giving a reason for the violence.

Couldnt agree more about martyrs, the beginning was intriguing but ends up getting very silly very quickly though if it had been called "pink fluffy avocadoes" I may have liked it more just for the creative title lol.
