Forgotten Horror Movie from the Late 80's/Early 90's

I apologize since I won't be able to provide a lot of cohesive detail since I was very young when I watched this movie. :(

This movie involves a middle age man moving into a house. A evil presence (person or entity) is released from the basement of the house (I believe it was a large double sided basement door built into the floor).

In one scene, a librarian (or someone in a library) has been attacked and is dragging his body across the floor, if I recall correctly, he had been ripped in half.

At the end, the man succeeds in getting the evil presence back into the basement but at the cost of his life.

This movie would've been available on VHS between 1987-1992 roughly.

I have been trying to find the name for this movie for a long time now.
