don't believe the hype

i'm sure people on this site have commented on these movies already, but i don't have time to go through hundreds of threads hoping i don't repeat someone's review... so i'll be a dick a start a new thread! anyshit, i recently watched eil roth's cabin fever and hostel b/c i was getting sick of my friends asking me about them. i wasn't impressed... now, i can be a pretty tough film critic let alone horror movie critic and these movies just didn't live up to their hype. hostel was a bit better than fever, but both (i thought) were inconsistent. it seemed like just when the scene was getting interesting something stupid would happen or an actor would say something out of character. hostel had some great scenes like in the end when jay hernandez's character is trying to escape the torture mill and runs into one of the customers or the 1st torture scene envolving the gay friend. also fever had one or two good scenes as well (when the main character turns over his decaying girlfriend and she's still alive but the flesh around her mouth has rotted away). but a handful of cool scenes do not make a movie good and these fell short of my expectations...

I thought Cabin Fever was good fun. Far from a masterpiece but you could see Eli Roth has potential. I'm waiting on Hostel to come out over here on DVD but I'm looking foward to it. I think newb (?) said it had lotsa tits n gore so I'm down to check it out.

I thought Cabin Fever was better than Hostel. Hostel had too many issues with the main characters for me to fully get into it. They were utterly unsympathetic, so much so in fact that I actually wanted them all to die. I really think that Roth has potential as a filmmaker, but he isn't going to realize it if he just keeps making the "gore for its own sake" type films.

Absolutely. I agree with every word.

Me too. This isn;t it. This is hollywood shit gore. Actually, Cabin Fever probably had more gore than this. I can think of three scenes that are "gory", and the rest of the film is a sickly prod at character development, which doesn't work.

Hostel and Cabin Fever have to be my 2 of my favorite movies, maybe it just depends on your preference of horror movies, and what you look to get out of it. I like Eli's style I guess.

I was a fan of Eli Roth, until he came out with Hostel - and my opinion of him dropped slightly, aswell as Quentin for backing it up so much. The two are buddies, so I can forgive him more then Eli.

Cabin Fever would be in the top list of more recent horror movies for me (not near the top of the top list, but still in there). It was just the way it was done, and the mood. It had a certain feeling that I really enjoyed, and can't explain further - it was just me, I connected.

Hostel on the other hand was a big step away from Cabin Fever. It was too Hollywood, and it really shone through. The entire first half really felt like porn, and was utterly boring. The characters were sort of plain, and bland, and I didn't care for any of them. The events didn't bring any excitment in to the film either, but at least it got Eli's hornyness out and done with. The second half was ultimately better - and sort of saved the film from being a complete wreck. The asian girl was a definite plus, as I honestly only cared for her - pathetic considering she wasn't given much developement. I wouldn't re-watch it, and I'm glad I waited for the DVD. Not something I'd suggest.
