Movie theater popcorn is bad for you?

In a report that will shock anyone that doesn't go to the movies, an advocacy group claims that movie theater popcorn is not a very good nutritional snack.

In a press release, the Center for Science in the Public Interest says they commissioned laboratory analyses indicating a medium-size popcorn and medium-size soda purchased at a Regal theater, the country's largest movie theater chain, contains the nutritional equivalent of three McDonald's Quarter Pounders with 12 pats of butter.

"Sitting through a two-hour movie isn't exactly like climbing Mt. Everest," a senior nutritionist for the Center said. "Why do theaters think they need to feed us like it is?"

The Center points out the high amount of saturated fat results from movie theater chains Regal and AMC using coconut oil to pop their popcorn. The Cinemark chain uses canola oil, which results in much less "artery-clogging" saturated fat.

For their part, the chains aren't talking, reports The Los Angeles Times, though Regal falls back on the MPAA's statistic that says the average American only attends six movies a year and thus: "Theater popcorn and movie snacks are viewed as a treat and not intended to be part of a regular diet."

But, what about those who attend six movies a week? Or even on a single weekend?

Coconut oil? That's an improvement. Most theatres used to use cottonseed oil, one of the hardest things to digest known to humanity.

Meh, I never get the popcorn anyway. It's bland as it is, makes annoying noises and gets stuck in your teeth/ throat. Not to mention the extortianist prices! Nah, I'll be happy with the sweets from the supermarket next door.

Pretty much my feelings on it.

But I will also add, that the amount of salt in the butter (that you add yourself), tends to burn my fingers. If it's harmful to ones body on the externally, why would one consume it internally?

Unless you go to the movies every week, I don't think it's a bad deal to indulge while your out. Just exercise and eat reasonable portions... people are so off the wall with what's "good" and "bad" these days.

I thought the inability to turn a door-knob after consuming a bucket was a pretty big tell... but good to see people are still willing to dump money into laboratory studies...

Ok f*cker, you have the carrot sticks and mineral water... I'll stick with my tub-o-buttered corn and refreshing soda, thanks.

Imitation butter is bad for you? No way. Next thing you're going to tell me that I shouldn't make sandwiches using chocodiles instead of bread.

popcorn and doughnuts. I love the smell of them. But left unimpressed by the taste.

They don't seem to put fake butter on the popcorn anywhere here - I get the impression its because of the mess it makes...

OMG... What if they topped a chocolate-iced donut with cinema-buttered popcorn?!?!?
