Who Here Writes Horror?

I've written three complete screenplays (one short film and two features). The short film screenplay was made into a short film in college but the two feature screenplays were never made. I tried sending out several cover letters for the one feature screenplay to writing agencies but they never got back to me. The second feature-length screenplay I tried making into a film myself but I couldn't get anyone to help me with it and it was way too extravagant of a screenplay to make by myself.

I always wanted to be a horror author, so I've gone back to that original goal for myself. I'm currently working on two books, a novel and an omnibus of stories. I am thinking of going back to the three screenplays I've written and novelizing them, expanding the stories.

Who here writes horror and what type of horror do you like to write about, if you don't mind me asking? You don't have to tell me your plot ideas or characters if you are not comfortable doing so.

We have 3 that don't come around anymore: RoderickUsher (Sean Keller), Doc Faustus (Garrett Cook), and neverending (Lee Widener).

JakeAshworth has shared some terrific stuff that he's written.
There's also a few people here who write really solid film reviews, horcrux being particularly good.

I haven't used a real forum in years, to be honest. I actually miss forums like this one, so I decided to get back into them. There's something personal and neighbourly about places like this that you can't find on Facebook.

I hope RoderickUsher, Doc Faustus, and neverending are doing well for themselves as writers. Art of any kind is a long arduous road. Do they self-publish or submit their work through publishing companies? I'm considering self-publishing because it gives me more control over the finished product. Yeah, it will take more ingenuity and hard work on my part, but I've struggled this long with my art. I can struggle some more.

I met horcrux in another thread. They seem like a cool person. Actually, everyone in this entire forum seems pretty cool. I'll have to read some of their reviews when I get a chance.

What kind of stuff does JakeAshworth write? Reviews, short stories, etc?

I know I just met you the other day, but I'm honestly proud of you. You seem like a cool person, by the way. The fact that you have three novels under your belt shows that you've accomplished a lot. What type of horror do you like to write, may I ask? Zombies, vampires, werewolves, serial killers, etc? I'm a plotter, not a pantser, so it takes me forever to finish a work of fiction. I have a love-hate relationship with everything I write.

I usually write satiric horror or serial killer horror, but I'm trying to branch out into monster fiction and science fiction as well. Horror will always be my passion. I have three screenplays under my belt, but no published works of fiction. I need to get myself into gear.

I checked out Deadite Press' website. They look pretty freaking cool. I didn't know they existed. I've heard from various authors that you get a lot of rejection letters through publishing companies. How did you find Deadite Press?

Both Doc and neverending self-publish. RoderickUsher is doing quite well for himself as a screenwriter in California. He's on IMDB, look him up (Sean Keller).

Very cool, it says Sean Keller worked on Giallo (2009). I love Dario Argento's films.

Yes, he did. He was still posting here when filming was going on. It was pretty cool having an "inside" look at movie making!

Thanks DreamWarrior. I write about a lot of different things. My first novel Harold's Ghosts (Hated that title, was calles Hidden but they made me change it) was a ghost story. I got it published at this horrible place PublishAmerica, didnt know any better. Im not proud of that one. I rushed through it, didn't really do any rewrites and only really did it to see if i could.

My second, Jeremiah, is about a serial killer. Same publisher but proud of that one.

My third, Eddie, is about an alien. I self published that but i was still pretty green about formats so it came out all weird. Im proud of the story though.

The one im working on now, Big Nasty, is about a Troll. This is my best work yet. Been working on it quite awhile.

I learned about Deadite through my editor, the aforementioned Doc Faustus. He has a book through them and pitched it to them after going over my book. Just hope theyre still interested by the time i finish.

I was told that all artists hate aspects of their work when in reality it's really good. It's those who never question their work who have the real problem. I watched interviews with Wes Craven were he talked about making Scream (1996) and not wanting to do it because it reminded him too much of Last House on the Left (1972). While Last House reaches some dark corners of humanity, it is not a bad film. It has a powerful message. Essentially, it's a grislier remake of Ingmar Bergman's Virgin Spring (1960). It talks about some grim subjects but subjects that need to be talked about.
