Yet another "new" series - Family Ties

Family Ties is an American sitcom that aired on NBC for seven seasons, premiering on September 22, 1982, and concluding on May 14, 1989. The series, created by Gary David Goldberg, reflected the move in the United States from the cultural liberalism of the 1960s and 1970s to the conservatism of the 1980s.[3] This culture was particularly expressed through the relationship between young Republican Alex P. Keaton (portrayed by Michael J. Fox) and his ex-hippie parents, Steven and Elyse Keaton (portrayed by Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter).

All I have to say is: WHYYYYYYYY ::mad::

Family Ties was hilarious, and usually well written beyond that. In 1982 and the next 4 years, it was the funniest show on TV next to Cheers. Everything else, besides Newhart-82, was dopey canned laughs gum balls.

Taxi, WKRP, Three's Co, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy, Jeffersons, Bosom Buddies, and MASH were all just ending, jumping their last dull unfunny sharks. Family Ties and Cheers were beacon of laughs for years until we got to the Simpsons and Seinfeld at the close of the 80s.

This would be a good time, culturally, to have a new Family Ties show... where you could poke fun at beliefs of various sides but in a sincerely loving ironclad family way.

Michael J Fox was of course every second 80s kids idol, so him being part of it was an added bonus. But the cast was actually all good - not too many shows have as much of a complete quality cast as this, to this day.
Always thought Valerie was mad cute too.
Sure at times it was a bit "lesson of the day" and all that but it never felt pushy or preachy, just real.
So yeah, agreed wholeheartedly.

One of the things that got me thinking about this was seeing how bloody "Fuller House" was in season ?4? now...it's like the new IN thing is re-doing/continuing 80s/early 90's shows - and this came to mind.

So yeah, bit of a dick lie...but actually based on something I'd like to see happen - in fact if it did, I see it doing better than all others in the same ballpark.
The cast is all thankfully still with us...and well, none of them seem to have been all *that* busy.
It would be nice to see the family again, huh?

Well said, Cheeba. I would imagine, if they wanted to emulate Family Ties it would be all new cast, with a different name, and all that. But I think Family Ties really nailed it with Alex being a high school to college aged family member, where he was still their child, but had well conceived thoughts that happened to be contrary to his parents well conceived thoughts. Michael J Fox was able to pull it off, to say the least, which was extremely rare at the time... I don't think it would be so rare today. Family Ties was much more rare than people knew. Kind of captured what All in the Family and The Jefferson's captured... but they, the writers, were just rolling with it, so unassuming, it was just really funny, nobody needed to take too seriously, it would just punch you in the face, nice and close to home, I really enjoyed it.

I think of the brilliance of the 'your mom is a real person' episode, as really hitting it close to home... it's the "Birthday Boy" episode (season 2 Ep 11).
