Short fiction "period-piece" recommendations

Hello forum people,

I'm wondering if anybody would have recommendations about gothic-style period pieces in horror fiction. I'm a freelance illustrator, so short fiction is generally better for my erratic schedule, but any recommendations are cool. One of my favorite short stories, in this vein, is Stephen King's "Jerusalem's Lot". I just love the old gothic atmosphere. For some reason, stories in a modern setting just don't move me the same way. They just don't spark my imagination as much. Thanks, in advance, for any tips.

The Castle of Otranto.

That was a pretty good story. The pacing was good, as well as the atmosphere. However, considering what had happened to Manfred's kids, it seems that he almost went unpunished for his crimes. Thanks for the recommendation!
