If the forums started with the latest post and went backward, it would save me a few clicks.

Just checking... do you know if you're looking at the forum main page, that lists all the thread topics in the middle column, at the end of the thread titles (in red color) is the last page link -- which is either a number like (1, 2) or it has the words "last page". So you can click on that last number or 'Last Page' it takes you to the last page (which is what I always do). That way there's no extra clicks.

The only extra work is scrolling to the bottom of that page.

The reason I wouldn't want to have the last post first is because most threads are, more or less, conversations... and you don't read convos backwards.
