Which was better? I just rented Manhunter because I didnt even know my movie place had it , but I have been Red Dragon's biggest fan forever.
I just cant imagine Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecktor(what the fuck is with that spelling?), and anyone but Edward Norton as Will Graham cant possibly be as good, can they?
I'll watch it then give my opinion.

i gotta go with red dragon.manhunter, which i like was good for it's time and place.however i feel red dragon really nailed the tooth fairy (don't get me wrong..tom noonan's a creepy s.o.b.) with the tattoos and overall insanity that fiennes or whatever brought to the part.as for gramhn(again,ed nortan..good)william peterson had the maturity level going...oh shit,i sound like roger ebert!
p.s. enjoy the movie.:D

Well I liked both, Red Dragon is probably better because of Anthony, but I really thought Manhunter was an excellent movie, and the original, it would have been better I think if AH had been in it.
Ralf Fiennes though,is just too cute to play the killer......the whole thing with the blind girl makes no sense with him cast in that part! Creepier to see her walking around with the other freak not knowing. A hair lip does not make an otherwise good looking guy ugly..........that was just untruthful for me!

haha I agree, sometimes I think Fienes is just to good looking to go out with a bind girl. He needed someone that appreciated his looks, even with the hairlip.

No offense to those that liked it, but I thought Manhunter was awful. True, i saw it long after i had seen red dragon, but I was really surprised to find out it was Michael Mann's movie. Heat is one of my all time favorites, but Manhunter seemed like a Glen Campbell video with a serial killer.
The other hting is that the guy who played the killer was Kaine from robocop 2, and i have never been able to take him seriously.
I liked Ralph Fiennes as the killer. I never realised how HUGE he could be. He was really intimidating, which is something because i'm a pretty big guy so that usually doesnt mean much to me.
I love Brian Cox, but Hopkins IS Hannibal lector. And when Edward Norton plays a part, that is his part. no one else can match him.

I watched Manhunter last night, and I was really impressed. Its weird for me to not have a real opinion on whether I liked the original or the remake more, but they are both really good.
I think overall, Brian Cox is a better actor, and I LOVED how he did Hannibal, but I have been trained to think of Mr. Hopkins as Mr. Lector so there was a little something missing. I adore Ed Norton and everything about him, and I think he gave Will Grahams character another dimension. The whole movie, I kept thinking the guy playing Will looks way to much like a balding Matthew McConaghey so I couldnt focus.
Manhunter handled the relationship between Dolarhyde and the blind girl much better than Red Dragon I think, and it also had a much much better ending.
Overall Red Dragon gets my vote because it gave so much more history about Hannibal and Graham, and also about how Dolarhyde became the killer that he is.

Red Dragon far surpasses Manhunter in just about every aspect of film. However, you can't look past the fact that Manhunter was the original prequel to Silence of the Lambs. But, that is the only thing that the movie has going for it. Brian Cox sucks as Hannibal the movie was edited terribly. At the end, a cop gets shot with a Shotgun and you can see the string that is pulling her away from the door. Red Dragon worked because it was made in the present time period. The acting was great, and the fact that Anthony Hopkins is and always will be Hannibal Lector.

I think he was recommending going to the contributer's corner to do a review of the movies. I think it was a freindly recommendation :)
And welcome btw.
Manhunter is almost sickening in comparison to Red Dragon. Manhunter just felt like a long, depressing 80's music video.
In Red Dragon, i love seeing how Will handles Lector, especially comparing how he deals with Hopkins version compared to Clarice. She was intimidated as hell by him. Will is very defensive and stand-offish, and not afraid to cut lector off in the middle of his demands, putting HIM on the defensive to get what he wants./ HE is never in control of the situation, but he at least balances the power at times.

I didn't think that he was trying to be rude or anything, I was just confused is all. Anyway, I totally agree with you about the differences between Will and Clarice. Have you ever wondered whether or not the fact that she is woman has a strong impact on it as well. Plus as far as we know, this is her first big case and so she was probably trying to deal with that. Because in HANNIBAL, Clarice is much stronger and isn't afraid to attack Hannibal when need be. Will we already now has had an encounter with Lector at the beginning of Red Dragon. So in truth I forgot where I was going with this, but it is just an interesting thought.

I know you werent, it just seemed that some people were confused, so i was just lending a helping hand :)
It IS interesting to see Clarice grow. However, from what i here, it's kind of lost in the book....
I really wish they had been able to get Jodie Foster back. Poor Julianne moore. Always getting stuck with being so-so. She was very good as starling, but she was playing second fiddle to an excellent actress, rather than merely a good one.

ManHunter was HORRID. I fell asleep, most likely as my body's way of protecting my brain from expiring.....Red Dragon was GREAT..stuck closely to the book...good deal.
And Hopkins OWNS the part of Hannibal, just as Norton owns his part.

I found Manhunter to be rather dull. It looked more like a TV movie. Red Dragon was a much better adaptation of what I thought was the best of Harris's Lechter novels. As far as the films go, though, Silence Of The Lambs is still the best.

lol I read in another review that they thought Red Dragon looked like a TV movie.
I'm undecided on which was really better. I think I enjoyed Red Dragon more, but (Im sorry to say) I think Brian Cox was a more engaging Dr. Lecter.

Manhunter was a hundred times better movie than Red Dragon. Michael Mann is a much, much better director than this mediocre Brett Ratner. Red Dragon, with its nauseating red tint the whole way through, looked like a crappy music video or something. Manhunter had many great angles and camera technques, Red Dragon looked like every other movie made by some nobody who the company hired just to save some money. The only problem with Manhunter was that Anhony Hopkins wasn't in it. Other than that, every other actor was better than their replacement in Red Dragon (except maybe for that weird little blonde-haired kid in Manhunter). I think anybody else who knows anything about horror movies will agree with me.
Funny, i think i said Manhunter reminded me of a music video :)
I really disliked Manhunter. Christ, they didnt even keep the title...
Brian cox is excellent, but I have known Hopkins' Lecter for longer, so thats who i like.
Mann mad eone of my favorite movies (Heat. I LOVE that movie) but Manhunter was too close to his Miami Vice days for me to think too much of it. *0s movies have to have a special something for me to sit through them, Like the Terminator.
