This is my first 'Top' list.....

At the moment I'm really favouring this:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a360/ferox-13/TransNakedNeck.jpg

Despite their weird looks - they're a common enuff breed and can be used as layers and also for meat. They forage well for food and very hardy and resistant to most diseases.

Though know in the states as the Turken - I much prefer its original name Transylvanian Naked Neck which it acquired not from its country of origin but its preference to eating grain that has been soaked in blood..

When we get a place with a yard I hop to get a few of these - they seem ideal to Irish weather conditions..

Next up:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a360/ferox-13/Malay-Male.jpg

This chicken original came from Pakistan. They're fricken huge and are popular in cockfighting. If i get one of these I'm going to make it a little TRex outfit...

Another of my faves:

The Sultan is a breed of chicken that originally came from Turkey. They obviously dress for sucess but other chickens will pick on them for this reason.. Unlike most chickens they have five toes on each foot.

The Sumatran fighting cock - very popular with the travelling community here. They train them in JuJitsu and Muai thai and fight them to death in cage matches..Unlike most chickens - they are decent enough at flying (in chicken terms anyway)..

Food of the gods was the first thing I thought of when I ws making this:

http://blog.timesunion.com/farmlife/files/2008/05/silky-chicken-0004.jpg

The Silkie is a bit of a looker too- a bit too poncey for my liking though..They're friendly as fuck and unlikely to peck the eyes out of your children..

I'm considering making a set of Chicken Top Trump Cards..

Nothing would trump Cthulhu Chicken - but I bet non euclidean shaped eggs would be a bitch to lay..

My flat mate almost bought me that calendar for my Bday on Saturday (or something similar0.

He got me a WWE divas one instead :(

Sales of that chicken calendar skyrocketed after Conan O'Brien mentioned it as an Oprah style recommendation along with Killdozer and a CD with Steven Seagal.

Happy Birthday, by the way. I didn't see an announcement on the forum.

If we're allowed to talk about all things fowl, I would like to mention Long Island's sole tourist attraction: The Big Duck:http://www.nps.gov/history/nr/twhp/wwwlps/lessons/6roadside/6images/6img3cl.jpg

It's big.:D

For obvious reasons, I'm partial to the Rhode Island Red

Thats a fine Cock, Newb.

That ain't the first time that phrase has been uttered in my direction.

The difference between a hooker and a rooster...

a rooster says "cock-a-doodle-doo" and a hooker says "any-cock-will-do"

Screw it, I'm mixing things up a bit.

But I must say, this has been a very informative thread so far! I was shocked at how much they vary, especially that Malay Male. Jesus, that thing looks freaky.

The eggs taste fantastic, we even have a small trade of selling some to people in work for £1 per six (about £1.60 for free range in shops) which wont make us rich but does cover the cost of feed.

If you want them to charge over every time you enter their pen or if they're free in the garden, its the promise of wheat or corn seed, they go mad for it.

Hopefully - I'll be getting a new place soon and my ambition to be an EGG BARON will at last be realised...

I will have to start with a couple of Rhode Island red hens or something similar before moving onto more exotic ones.

Cool. A few people seem to be doing that these days. Be pretty cool to be somewhat self sufficient. Gotta get the garden sorted out and plant some new stuff. Had tomatoes are a few other things earlier in the year.
