Michael De Luca has partnered with Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta to develop a bigscreen remake of the 1987 Mickey Rourke supernatural thriller "Angel Heart."

Producers optioned remake rights from a private U.K. firm, which owns the rights to the original film, which was produced by Carolco and distributed by TriStar.

De Luca, Rosenzweig and Gaeta also optioned the underlying book rights to William Hjortsberg's novel "Falling Angel," from which the original film was adapted.

The original, which caused a stir for its steamy sex scenes, was written and directed by Alan Parker and also starred Robert De Niro and Lisa Bonet.

Novel follows the exploits of Harry Angel, a New York detective hired by a mysterious client to track down a once-popular performer indebted to him. While pursuing this seemingly routine investigation, Harry encounters dark and supernatural forces.

De Luca, whose recent producing credits include "21" and "Ghost Rider," said he has long been a fan of the novel. "It's a great blend of genres with a great Faustian bargain, compelling, universal themes and a rare combination of literary and commercial appeal," he said.

"Angel Heart" remake was brought to De Luca Prods. by exec Josh Bratman, who will executive produce.

Producing partners Rosenzweig and Gaeta recently teamed with Adam Shankman to set up the Disney comedy "Matadors," which is based on the true story of the Chicago Bulls' 14-member troupe of male dancing cheerleaders.

You have to wonder what exactly is the expiration date on movies according to Hollywood that the remakes are coming out this quickly.

At least this one took over 20 years. Think about more recent remakes like The Hulk...

It wont break my heart if this is remade. I found the original to be a Zalman King-style soft porn timewaster with some voudou thrown in. And really a good demarcation point for when DeNiro started selling out. I'll take Serpent and the Rainbow over this one.

I may take my spit back.

I recently watched Angel Heart .
I saw so many flaws and the acting wasn't as strong as I had originally thought. Robert DeNiro was so wooden and unsatanish.
I remember it as a movie that blew me away , was incredibly sexy and eerie.
But then again I was a teenager, and things tend to be more impressive when dealing with forbidden/ controversial subject matter.
And if you watched it when it first came out you probably remember how much drama came with this film.

i absolutely love AngelHeart.

. Mickey Rourke gave an incredible performance.

there is only one thing i'd change .. and thats the red glowing eyes ... but the Rourke is so outstanding i can forgive that.

remake angelheart without rourke and you might as well call it something else and market it as a different film altogether.

Look for a cameo! They all do it. Danw of the Dead had 4/5 of the original cast (the names anyone would recognize, anyway), and even Gaylen Ross shows up as a clothing store name.

Well, even though Rourke has matured as an actor(a really outstanding performance in SinCity), he's still lacking in the personal issues department, judging by a recent arrest here in South Florida. If he makes a guest appearance in the remake, it might have to be from a holding cell.
