What's your job ChronoGrl?

1) you can start buttoning your shirt all the way back up again :)

And get off my knees...? ;)

Do you want to buy me a beer?

If you lived closer to Boston, I'd definitely take you up on that offer.

What's your job ChronoGrl?

I work for a software company in Cambridge, CIDC (http://cidc.com/), that engineers and maintains the software for Everest Poker and Everest Casino. I work specifically with the poker product. We're the sixth highest ranked poker site in the industry.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/everest.jpg

If you're a poker player, you should check it out:

www.everestpoker.com

If you're in the US, we only allow Free Play for US players (to avoid legislative backlash), so the Free Chip site is:

www.everestpoker.net

So, essentially, I get to develop and design enhancements for this product. And when it comes down to it, my job entails playing poker. For example, in November we introduced the game Omaha to the software, so I got to take a business trip to Montreal to train our Customer Service team on the game Omaha, i.e. I spent 3 days straight just playing poker. :D

My new title: Product Manager.

My previous job at the company focused a lot on being the liaison between the Product Group and the Customer Service team, dealing with a lot of customer service escalations as well as providing internal support for our Marketing Department - BORING.

NOW I get to focus solely on the product, which entails doing market research ("market research" being playing poker on competitive sites) and developing enhancements for the product. It's really interesting, challenging, and a lot of fun. I also love the people that I work with. AND (to be completely dorky, but, hey, you asked) I honestly enjoy writing Function Requirement Documents that outline the step-by-step detail of the specific product enhancement that I'm working on (for example, my most recent project will enable a player to challenge another player of their choice to a tournament; it's a 20+ page document that's now ready for technical review and it's really rewarding to work with the developers to get it going). A lot of people think that writing FRD's are boring and unnecessarily tedious, but I enjoy it.

Awesome!

I haven't played poker for ages... probably because I need a raise too :D

I completely get the dorky thing with writing up docs. I am a programmer, and I love getting handed a complicated problem. kind of similar, who the hell ASKS for complicated math problems?

You're in the US, right? Which sites did you play at? (honestly just curious - one of my coworkers used to play a lot at Absolute Poker and Full Tilt because they allow US players).

Even though it's my job I'm terrible at poker (though I've gotten significantly better since my time here). I am not a big fan of Texas Hold'em and definitely prefer Omaha (I think that there's a lot more strategy involved in Omaha). Which poker games do you play? And what do you do, EC?

Vod - I totally get you. I LOVE writing these specification documents and working with the development teams to coordinate the different tools of the software (WinClient, WebClient, etc.). Where do you work as a programmer?

By the way, guys, nice grammar and syntax too. I appreciate that stuff, 'specially on the web.

I actually telecommute for a company in Seattle, though we are currently in NH. Moving to NC if we can in October.

I miss promotions... :)

My current job winds up being "well paid, but no upward mobility". Consistancy of work is more important than anything (I'm a contractor). Actually kind of like Rod's line of work, where I only work as much as there is demand. Luckily, the company i work for loves me and I really like the work.

For everyone who has yet to work or has a job they hate, get a job you like. That is very important. I work out of my house and make a ton of money (when i am not having hea dbutting contests with clients who dont want to pay...), and i never even went to college. But I love programming.

PLus, I have time to write :)

Good job Chrono you totally deserve it.

I played Poker yesterday in a tournament and got beat by a bad beat. :(

I flopped the nuts Flush with a Jack and Seven of Diamonds and there were two others in the hand and I didn't think anyone else would have two diamonds either especially not ones that could beat me. Someone raised, the other guy reraised and then I went all in they both called. One guy was bluffing with two pair and then the other dude had the Queen and Ace of Diamonds and I was dominated.

i must be the only guy here who would hate that job.

i'd rather rub salt in my eyes than play poker for any more than 10 minutes a year.

Oooo... That IS a bad beat.

Thanks for the congrats, guys!

And, Urge, I never really understood/enjoyed poker either, but as part of this job I've read and studied a lot of the different strategies and when it comes down to it, a lot of it is nerdy statistics and I actually find it pretty interesting.
