What decade are most of your favourite horror movies from?

Personally, I think mine is the 1970's. It seemed an exciting time for films in general - there was more graphic stuff happening onscreen, and boundaries were being broken - but also the old school approach was still apparent. One could argue that nothing particularly new has been done since the 70's films.

Some great 70's horror films: The Exorcist, Blood On Satan's Claw, The Omen, To The Devil A Daughter, Halloween, The Vampire Lovers, Horror Express, Bloodsucking Freaks...

So, what do you think? If you could give a reason or examples as well, that would be grand.

My apologies if this has been done before.

Heh heh heh...

THE 70's!!

Some of the very coolest, most daring, most innovative, most startling horror films were made in the 70's. A long list of favorites. Great horror flicks.

with out a doubt - the 70's.

it was the last time (until recently) that the industry took the genre seriously.

big directors worked with A-list adult stars.

and there was a grit to the style that was prevalent across all of the genres in the 70's - horror had it in spades.

the films were allowed to unfold at a slower pace. the 80s would bring the ADD viewer mentality - where everything had to be rushed - no down time - no slow build. (with few exeptions - one being exorcist 3 - which is why i like it so much)

that being said ... i think horror is making a quality comeback in the last 2 or 3 years - getting better all the time.

90's

It's pathetic to look at the movies that came out from 1990-1998 and to look at the movies that have come out since 2000. Also any really good movies that did come out, came out in 2000 or 2001

Yeah, the 70s, of course. But the 40s were nearly as good.

The 70s were amazing. I dig 80s horror as well and saw much more of it in the theaters, but Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Carrie, Halloween, Dawn of the Dead, The Exorcist, The Omen, Jaws, Alien, Deep Red, Torso, The Hills Have Eyes, Straw Dogs...

these are the films that taught me my craft

big directors worked with A-list adult stars.

ooooh I can't wait to spill the beans on our latest news... :D It'll have to wait for a week or so, but I'm FREAKING OUT over it!:D :D :D

This is hard for me. I absolutely love 80's horror. Those are the films I often have the most fun with. Evil Dead 2 is my favorite movie of all time.
BUT, even though it is probably more of a tie for me personally, I think I also have to go with the 70's. When I think of the movies that genuinely scared me when I was a kid, they mostly seem to come from the 70's. Many effective, original films from that time.

I had to say 70's for Halloween and many others. But halloween is what made it for me.
