Shabana Nisha thought she had a happy, loving marriage in which she and her husband could share their hopes and dreams. But the 24-year-old childcare worker had no idea how violently that illusion was about to be shattered.
On October 4, 2004, her husband of three years Saiyad Jabbar turned on her in a bizarre attack – stabbing her in the stomach as she lay blindfolded on their marital bed, waiting for what Jabbar said would be an early birthday "surprise".
A section of her bowel protruded from her abdominal wound as she fled to a neighbour's house in Regents Park south of Brisbane to raise the alarm.
Jabbar, 27, was jailed yesterday for 6½ years over the attack.
The court was told Jabbar had lied to his wife about how well he was doing in his bank call centre job and how he planned to soon take her on a holiday to her homeland of Fiji. In reality he had lost his job.
His lawyer Simon Hamlyn-Harris told the Brisbane District Court: "He can't explain why he did what he did."
