View Full Version : Predict the Box Office (New Game)

bwind22
05-11-2006, 01:20 AM
Okay, I'm online 5 nights a week and sometimes I get bored. Now is one of those times, so while I was sitting here bored I ended up thinking of a new game that could end up being pretty fun...

It will be played once a week. Your goal is to predict the top 10 films at the box office for the upcoming weekend (Friday- Sunday)in order of which film will pull in the most money.

I will always make sure to post what new releases will be opening that weekend as well.

This week's new releases....

Poseidon
Just My Luck
Goal! The Dream Begins

So basically, you want to predict the top 10 films of the upcoming weekend in order.

A weekly winner will be declared on Monday of each week based on who had the most right answers. 10 points will be given for picking the box office winner, 9 for second, 8 for third, 7 for fourth, 6 for 5th and 5 for every correct pick in positions 6-10 on the box office chart. In the event of a tie, whoever posted their picks first will be deemed the winner.

Good luck to all.

If it turns out to be fun or well received, then you can expect to see this game again next week, and the week after and the week after, etc...

Just to give people a little aid the first week, here's last weekend's box office numbers...

1 Mission: Impossible III $47,743,273
2 RV $11,004,706
3 An American Haunting $5,783,508
4 Stick It $5,479,658
5 United 93 $5,347,860
6 Ice Age: The Meltdown $4,161,724
7 Silent Hill $4,013,871
8 Scary Movie 4 $3,690,454
9 Akeelah and the Bee $3,369,630
10 Hoot NL $3,368,197

Oh and by the way, since there isn't really any way I could cheat in this, I will be playing too.

I'll post my picks first so everyone gets the idea, but feel free to ask any questions you may have as well...

1 Poseidon
2 Mission: Impossible III
3 Just My Luck
4 RV
5 An American Haunting
6 United 93
7 Stick It
8 Ice Age: The Meltdown
9 Scary Movie 4
10 Goal! The Dream Begins

Those are my picks for this week.

I also forgot to mention that the deadline for submitting your picks is noon (CST) on Fridays. Any picks submitted after that won't be eligible.

Good luck.

Sunday? You need to make your picks before the weekend happens or else it kinda defeats the purpose ya know?

Sunday's too late. (Unless you are answering for next weekend.)

I could go over to boxofficemojo.com on Sunday and tell you with 90% certainty what the top 10 will end up.

I wasn't planning on doing so, the official stuff comes out Monday so I figured Sunday would be the deadline. Guess I'll do it sometime today then.

Haha. Deadline is Friday's at noon (central US time). I think I said that in the first post somewhere but I understand it was long and rambling. ;)

Yeah, it's extremely limited. As in, no chance of cracking the list this weekend. (Only 138 theatres, compared to 3,555 for Poseidon.)

Once it gets a wider release and has a chance at cracking the list, I'll make mention.

I'm just hoping that Keeping up with the Steins is released in a theater near me, because I desperatly want to see it (mainly because of Jeremy Piven)! If not, I'll go see Poseidon.

Jeremy Piven rocks on Entourage. Ari is one of my favorite television assholes ever!

Excellent idea! I like that way better. We will start that next week. Thanks for the suggestion.

We can do it for this week as well, but it's not required since some people already voted without it. No biggie.

Week 1 is just to see if this is even a good idea to begin with...

Anyways, my guess is Poseidon will pull in about 38 million right ahead of MI3 which will get about 36. That's my guess.

This upcoming weekend should be an interesting one at the box office with 2 HUGE new releases (The Da Vinci Code & Over the Hedge), not to mention the latest horror film to arrive, See No Evil.

I actually want to see all 3 of them, although I'll more than likely be waiting for all of them on video.

Right or wrong?

You only have to predict the weekend's gross of whatever film you list as #1 and since everybody's #1 pick will at least be in the top ten(barring a badly misinformed player), then the tie breaker will be determined by who's closest to their particular #1's gross. Therefor there's no need to predict the gross of the other films.

You only need to predict the dollar amount of the top grossing film that week. Everyone that is putting dollar amounts for more than just their #1 film is just doing extra for shits and giggles, but if it ever comes in to play, the tiebreaker will be who is closest to guessing the $$$ made by the top movie at the box office that weekend.

The majority of movie goers aren't worrying about directors unless it's Tarantino, Speilberg ect. Which are frequently mentioned throughout the promtion of the film anyway.

yes thats true, plus the overwhelming sense of curiosity linked with the whole "what happened to Jean Grey?", also the big name franchise, big stars, two previous blockbusters, final chapter of the trilogy etc.

But still, the way in which Singer revived the comic-to-movie adaptation after Batman and Robin did have a big influence. I have to say X-Men was an awesome adaptation. Although X2 is my fav out of the 3.

I liked X2 better than the original (Wolverine goes berserk = money in the bank!) but I still havent seen the 3rd.

Anywyas, I highly doubt it'll end up being the final part in a trilogy. It just pulled in 107 mil on opening weekend. Do you honestly think they wont make another one?

I know they claim it's the last one, but we all know how Hollywood works and if it'll make money, they'll make it. X4 would make money & they know it. I bet there are Hollywwod fatcats in LA right now throwing around ideas.

There have been press releases from Fox chiefs on these lines already. X3 was part of "this trilogy" which has concluded, according to them. Read this (dated Jan 26, 2006) :-

"Despite the stupid title "X-Men: The Last Stand", Fox Head Tom Rothman has confirmed that there will indeed be an X-Men 4, and probably more after that as well. Now it's all well and good for him to say that now... but if X-Men 3 is a bomb (which we all know it won't be... even if it sucks) then those words will be quickly eaten.

So why the title "The Last Stand" then? Well, according to the good folks over at Movie Hole, Rothman offers the following explanation:

“It's the conclusion of this trilogy. These three movies work as a trilogy. These characters in this relationship, it's the culmination of that saga. It's the culmination and the resolution of those relationships laid out in the first two movies. That doesn't mean never, I would ever say never again, but I will say that this brings that saga to an end. It's quite the way the last Lord of the Rings, Return of the King, brought that trilogy to a conclusion in terms of those characters, that's what this movie does. It goes all the way back to the first one and rounds off and completes that three-part story”.

Perhaps someone should tell Rothman that the end of the Lord of the Rings was indeed actually the end of the whole series. He might have missed that part."

The X-Men series might be going for a new storyline...who knows? Maybe they will get Vince Vaughn or Clive Owen to play Gambit in X4.

:D

There are a few big movies opening this week....

Disney's Cars, as well as The Omen (Which opens Tuesday, but we are still only counting the Fri-Sun box office), A Prairie Home Companion all open widely, as well as An Inconvenient Truth, which is expanding to show in more theatres.

Well that's where I messed up last week with 'Prairie Home Companion', it hadn't opened wide yet.

Also, I don't think it makes sense to open on a Tuesday just for the marketing date.

Naw, it doesnt really. How much extra will they make with those couple days? And what if it opens & gets shredded by critics? Then, they'd be up shits creek without a paddle. They wouldn't even have the "opening weekend" thing going for them...

congrads BW...you were better than the rest of us...

I didnt expect X3 to tumble down so soon, and taking Da Vinci Code with it. Last Stand might have done #2, but #1?? damn.

Anyway, the curiosity value of the Pitt - Aniston break-up was more than the Jean Grey saga last week. Oh well.

1 thing about the curiosity value. If viewers are curious enough about Omen, then a release on a Tuesday wont matter. It takes only 3-4 days to break box-office records (as we have seen in X3 and other movies in the past) so lets see what happens to the Omen post 06 - 06 - 06.

Me and you made the same mistakes. I'm still shocked that the Omen only pulled in $15 Million and that it opened at #4. And An Incovinient Truth was a schocker also, as it broke box-office records by making $4,000 in only four theaters a couple of weeks ago. Damn! This weekend is going to be a mystery at the box-office in my opinion.

I was doing the same thing. Let alone, I just found out that F&F has more showings than Nacho Libre does at my local theater. My prediction stands, but I won't be surprised to see F&F with the #1 spot this weekend. It's been a shocking summer movie blockbuster season so far, with twists and turns everywhere (The Break-Up topping X3 still taking the prize so far, with The Omen's weak opening coming in at a close second).

Garfield looks terrible & will more than likely be a massive flop.

I think The Lake House looks stupid, but it'll do okay with the date crowd.

F&F as well as Nacho Libre will be hit or miss depending on how their reviews start rolling in. I could see either being a HUGE hit or a HUGE flop.

Yellow Jacket
06-15-2006, 01:56 AM
Garfield looks like shit and doesn't stand much of a chance at the box-office (why the fuck would you release this movie a week after Cars?!?)! The Lake House will do good with the date crowd, but not too well in the theaters IMO. And I agree with you whole-heartedly on the Nacho Libre & F&F statement! We'll just have to see what happens come Monday Morning.

Hey dude. Glad you want to play, but there's a couple things I should point out to you....

1- You only need to guess the $$$ amount for the #1 movie.
2- You only picked 7 movies, but we are trying to guess the top 10.

That's it. Just some pointers to get you started in the right direction. Good luck.

Just a little bit of info I work for Kerasotes theaters and we do this thing called tracking to see how interrested people are in certain films and well Monster House is tracking a 2..... out of 25. It will not be tops at the Box Office i can almost guarantee that.

Well, most of us didn't do very well this week. Apparently we either underestimated Pirates of the Carribean's box office appeal or we overestimated Monster House. Either way most of us only got 2 or 3 right.... Except for KruegerKid! Who dominated with 39 points to pull off his first victory!

Way to go KK!

Week 12 has The Ant Bully, John Tucker Must Die and Miami Vice all seeing wide releases....

Good luck.
