-- THE PET, by Charles Grant (not grabbing me so far -- I know Grant is a legend, but his style is just too "dry" for me, don't even know if I'm gonna make it even halfway through this one)

-- NEVERLAND by Douglas Clegg (re-reading it, actually, for the 3rd or 4th time -- this one is quickly moving up on my list as one of my favorite novels of all time . . . wow)

Dante's Commedia (or "The Divine Comedy")...

Currently on Canto 6, I think... Very cool stuff...

I'm such a movie geek that I'm trying to visualize how I would shoot this into a film version if I could... There would undoubtedly have to be a lot of creative license applied.

I've always wanted to read it, and finally found a good copy of it from 1957 in the library bookstore.

I'm currently reading a book about horror films called Projected Fears, pretty interesting.

I just abandoned a book called Hunted Past Reason by the guy who wrote I Am Legend (and whose name I'm totally blanking on) - which started cool (about hiking and, as a hiker, I thought that was cool) but then turned into cliche-driven Deliverance rip-off. I just skipped to the last page and felt all the better for it.

Last really cool horror-ish book I read was House of Blue Leaves, of which I liked the core of the story (but could've lived without all the "postmodern" graphic touches) but that's me.

I was an avid reader most of my life, i always had a book i was reading, sometimes two. Then i got a job at the helpdesk and my already shaky attention span got kicked in the groin and fed tons of sugar.

Now i have a hard time reading long posts here. i actually read more fo my stuff than anything.

Just finished reading Stephen King and Peter Straub's 'Blackhouse' - the sequeal to the 'Talisman' - and now I'm reading Dean Koontz, 'Odd Thomas'. And so far i have to conclude that the book isn't too good...pretty boring in actual fact, but i believe in giving chances...well, up untill page 200, or so.

Dean Koontz had a spate of good books like Watchers, Phantoms, Midnight anbd Lightning, but he misses way more often than he hits. It's like he writes novels for every single idea he has, and just hopes some of them dont suck.

Angels and Demons - the prequel to the Davinci Code...

i'm not liking it ... very simplistic ... tries to dazzle with 'true facts'
actual prose is pedestrian... and falls into every cliche thriller trap possible.

Does not finishing a book because it had a stupid and unbelievable conclusion count ? Then the last book I almost finished reading was Dean Koontz's 'House of Thunder' this morning. Everything was cool until (SPOILER!) we find out that the heroine's nightmares are all because she's actually being brainwashed by Soviets who captured her a year before. What a crappy way to finish off what was a really good book up until then. Worst of all is I have another Koontz book on my desk I was going to read afterwards. I'm tempted to read the ending first just to make sure it doesn't end up as lame as this one.

I find that's a commun problem woth Koontz. His books are usually pretty good, but he never knows how to end them IE- Cold Fire. Great book, until he starts explaining the wierd shit.

Just finished Children of Dune by Frank Herbert. That is the 3rd book of the Dune series and was shockingly good. The first book Dune was great, and then I read the 2nd book Dune Messiah and it was not nearly as good and the first, although it wasn't terrible by any means. So I figured I read the 3rd to see if, as sometimes happens, the series just continues going downhill after the first. It didn't. The 3rd was just as good as the 1st.

I'm well into book four, God Emperor of Dune, and would agree that the story has gotten weird. Unfortunately, it seems like Herbert has created such a vast story that he can't help but get a little weird. So far an OK book. I will put off reading the 5th and 6th books, which I have already bought, for a little while. Read a few others and then come back to the Dune story afresh.

I was away at my cabin last week, and pretty much all I do there is either read or watch movies:D

Here's what I read:

Falling Angel by William Hjortzburg(sp?)- Great book that inspired Angel Heart. Seeing as all the stores here suck, I cant compare it to the movie, but it was a great read. Fast paced, action-packed, and an ending that'll hit ya like a ton of bricks [Unless you've seen the movie, of course:P]

Pet Semetery by Stephen King- I thought the same of this as I do of most King books [Green Mile and The Shining exempted]. It had a great plot, but the man really isnt a very good writer. His tangents into pointlessness had me bored into submission in some points. Overall, it was OK, I guess.

Along Came a Spider by James Patterson- My parents both love the Alex Cross novels, so I firgured it was time I read one. I certainly wasnt disapointed. Well written, and fast-paced for the most part, plus it had tons of twists, most of which were pretty unexpected.

Oddly enough, all 3 of those have movies based on 'em, but I havnt seen any....

Kiss the Girls by James Patterson- Definatly a recomended read if you're into crime/detective type novels. Having read Along Came a Spider, the 1st book in his Alex Cross saga, I am definatly becoming a fan of Mr. Patterson, and I plan to read more. He has a knack for creating creepy vilains, not so much in this as in ACAS though.

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman- Been hearing tons of good things boput this guy, so I figured that I aughta read something of his. Definatly didnt disapoint. Very good read. The varied characters were a strong point: It seemlessly combined everything from the very human, very realistic character of Richard, to the larger-than-life characters such as Croup and Vandemar. The world he created was also breathtaking, as well as very realistic i a fantastic sort of way. In fewer words: I loved it, cover to cover.

I think Patterson is good plotwise and I actually did like Kiss the Girls. But I don't really like his abrupt writing style, it feels like the characters are never properly developed and the chapters are annoyingly short. But I still read them...LOL....hey, they are quick anyway.

I've just been reading William Hope Hodgson series books called CARNACKI. Your basic Ghost hunter with almost realistic tellings of hantings, both real and fake within the story. These are very old books and the setting is in what seems the mid to late 1800's in England. Very good read.

The Walking by Bentley Little. Although I do enjoy Little's work, this novel brought to light some problems I have with it. He is a brilliant stylist, and his narrative flows very well, but he seems to have a problem with ending his books. The finale seemed a little flat and sort of unrealistically happy, as is typical of his work. The setup is probably the best of any Little book I've read though, so we can say this one was more about the journey than the destination.

I think you would like Beauty,Marroe. It's a spin on the Sleeping Beauty Tale. I should check it out, I like things like that...I'll be starting on "Wicked" soon, which of course isn't a spinoff, but kind of the same deal I think. Thanks for the suggestion.

The Wyrm by Stephen Laws. Interesting twist on the classic vampire story. Next reading: The Wheel of Time. Again. There's a new volume out, and I've totally forgotten what happened. No better place to start than the beginning, eh?

Latest read ~ Climbing Mount Improbable by R. Dawkins (Finals are drawing near so my reading has to be helpful in that regard.) If you're interested in Biology or Evolution it's a good book.

Currently reading Einstein's Heros.

I had to read To Kill A Mockingbird for school. I finished it about a week ago. I didn't like it. It just wasn't my kinda book. Though, I will admit to it having its moments. But they came very rarely.

currently I'm reading: the federalist papers
the 48 laws of power
watership down
the complete sherlock holmes
Choice Theory
Forensics for Dummies

no understand that some of these are read off and on when I don't feel like reading anything else but for the most part all are all actively being read.

Just finished a book about a month ago called the forensics of vampires. quite good.

there's also a retelling of the Odyessy by Margaret Atwood, told from the point of view of Penelope called the Penlopiad - i might read that next

Its part of a series of books called Discworld. Well worth a look but dont be expecting horror they are more comedy but really well written. This is a world which is a big disc sat on top the backs of four elephants who in turn are riding a giant turtle swimming thru space! This book is about a coven of witches battling it out with a family of vampires who are trying to overcome their traditional weaknesses ( such as religious symbols n stuff )

that sounds kewl. I just picked up one of the books I've been missing from the anita blake vampire hunter series "the laughing corpse" -- I almost bought her newest anita blake but her newer ones aren't as much fun, not as dark and nasty with a sense of humor, she really seems to've switched her focus to "how much sex and in how many different ways can I portray it and with how many different types of creatures." I find that gets abit boring after a while.

I also bought the first in a series called "hot blood" which is an anthology exploring horror, blood, and sex -- all the best taboos.

Pratchett is awesome! I've just finished THUD!, which brings me up to date on the whole Discworld series (20+ books).

A word to those interested in reading Pratchett. Don't start at the beginning. His early work is a little weak compared to what he's been putting out during the last ten years. Start somewhere near Feet of Clay or Lords and Ladies. Then once you're hooked, the earlier work is alot of fun but you'll see what I mean.

Ive tried that for my g/f. Got a book with some reflexology implements and attempted to ease her constant back problems. Only lasted about a minute cos she couldn't stop laughing, claimed I was deliberately tickling her feet. Thats gratitude for you.

Laughing or crying is actually quite normal,it is releasing tension in places that most people don't even realize there IS tension.
I was doing this pressure point thing on my best friends shoulder muscles and she started screaming at me....she wasn't ready to release and she felt like she was going to combust if I didn't stop, poor thing.
Anyways,I think I am going to go into reiki healing...if I can find a damn teacher here in this fucked up town,I am going to die here, I just know it....death by uncreative closeminded shithead people:D

The more I learn about science the less I like these types of books.

What I'm reading right now?

"The Foundations of Parasitology" Roberts and Janovy
It's a textbook, not exactly riveting but interesting if you're into biology.

"Creepers" by Morrell
It's a little strained on some of the storylines but overall pretty decent.

Something Blah Blah Titus Crow by Lumley
In a moment of weakness, I picked up yet another Lumley novel at the library. I'm blaming it on my wife, who wanted me to hurry up.
