"Wild zero" 6/10

This movie didnīt try to make much sense and not much of what happened was explained.

Like:

What turned people into zombies? And why only some people?

I know "Wild zero" isnīt to be taken seriously in any way and thatīs all okay by me. But it just didnīt manage to catch me. Thought it was kinda monotonous and i didnīt get the humor if there was any. The "cool" super hero rock band annoyed the hell out of me, and even though iīm a huge rock fan myself, i thought the music SUCKED from beginning to end.

What i DID like about it was the gory computer effects such as the exploding heads. And i found it funny that even though the hero found out that the love of his life had a "yoda" in her pants, he was able to turn a blind eye to it and ended up together with her. Brave guy.;)

"Tale of two sisters" 8-9/10

..........WAUW!!.........

Been a looong time since iīve seen an asian ghost movie that worked so well on so many levels.
First of all, the scares (even though i thought there were a little to few) worked very well, with the ghost-by-the-bed scene as the highlight. Creeepy.
Second, the story is quite good and gets more and more twisted as it progresses. Could have hoped for a longer climax at the end, but..... Meh..

Third, the acting was tereffic, especially from the two girls and the stepmom. Very convincing.

Forth and last, the director Ji-woon Kim really seems to know what heīs doing. Heīs also the man behind the excellent action/drama "A bittersweet life" wich also screams style. Iīll be looking out for this guys work in the future.

"The ghost" 7/10

Iīll bet not many have heard about this one. Itīs above average actually.

First of all, i have to say that when it comes to shock and scares "The ghost" has NO originality whatsoever. Lots of water, a ghost lady with long black hair and a bad combover, the victims sitting scared on their asses instead of running like hell, and itīs all like farted out of "Ringu".
But the creeps and shocks actually works in this one, compared to so many other rip-offs. Especially the shocks works quite nice mostly thanks to some very effective drum-like sound effects. The 1 computer effect there is also looks pretty decent.

The story is even more far out in itīs supernatural ellements than many other asian ghost stories, even though it doesnīt quite hold "water";) at the end. I donīt wanna spoil it for anyone who would wanna see it, so iīm not going into any details.
I liked the sureal scenes such as the main characters nightmares and the mental hospital bed scene. That was nicely made. Another thing i can say about it is, that itīs actually a really cruel and sad story.

A really anoying thing about this movie though is, that many of the female characters look so much alike, that it almost gave me a headache to figure out who was who. "Is that the good girl, the bad girl, the same girl, the poor girl..... WTF?!!!".
You seriously have to keep focus from beginning to end or youīll get lost easily. Iīm not good at that, so i had to watch it a third time to be sure i got it all..... Still didnīt quite get the very end though.

The acting was also quite good all the way around.... Except for 1 person maybe.

Thatīs all i have to say about that.

Hmmm..... How did the movie begin?

The_Return

In an office. Cant really remember exactly, but she went to the house pretty soon into the movie.

Few other bits I remember:

The REALLY creepy scene where one girl watches the shadow-thing [for lack of a better word] on a security camera.

Young girl scared to go out cause her friends who were killed want revenge.

Creepy catatonic grandmother type person.

Yup! I thought so. Youīve watched "Ju-on: the grudge".

"Ju-on" is the first, my favorite and the most scary of the four, and funny enough also the most low-budget.

It begins with a school teacher visiting the home of one of his pupils who has been missing at school.

I think it will be hard to rent in a video store, because itīs a low-budget movie made for television. But if you can, then get your hands on "Ju-on: the grudge 2". It has the biggest budget and an even more complicated storyline than "Ju-on: the grudge1". It might also be the most entertaining of them all. In my opinion, the next best in the japanese "Ju-on" serial.;)

Yeah, do that.;)

Though i must say that the american version was better than the japanese sequals to the original "Ju-on". Much of it is actually a blend of the 3 first "Ju-on" movies, just with a MUCH bigger budget, wich both worked for and against it. Mostly for, but i had prefered if Shimizu had let the ghost stay human and not CGI. Makes it more scary that way.:(

Premonition. Good flick that successfully avoided the Japanese horror cliches. Hiroshi Mikami gives a very subdued and effective performance as the lead. I usually don't focus on this aspect in movies, but the moody, ominous score is quite fitting and well done. 7/10

Great movie, but the fight scenes could have been better.

Seemed to me like the director was more interested in telling the story of young Baedal, than making great fighting scenes. I found that a little odd concidering it is a story about a man who fights all the best martial art fighters in Japan.

Throw Down 6/10.

Bit of an unusual one. I think the director intended to make more of the story, than rather show more martial arts scenes, and since all the fighting was based on judo, which doesn't seam to be as inventive, as other contact martial arts, I found some of the 'grappling' action scenes rather repetitive.

Not a bad film, with a few humorous scenes and a pretty good sound track.

The (in)famous Battle Royale. Unfortunately, the version I saw was a Korean region-free disc, possibly a bootleg, and the subtitles were... not that good. Otherwise the movie was pretty damn good, with a very interesting premise full of social commentary that viewers unfamiliar with Japanese culture may miss. Overall: 7/10

The Sword of Doom, a truly excellent film. Tatsuya Nakadai simply dominates the film, which is quite a feat considering that his costar was the great Toshiro Mifune. Nakadai gives what is quite possibly the most compelling portrait of pure evil I've ever seen in a film. Many critics try to draw comparisons between this film and Kurosawa's samurai epics, but even at his very darkest (Throne of Blood, Kagemusha) Kurosawa was never this grim. Oh, and the sword fights were great as well. I really can't recommend this one enough. 10/10

Face. Pretty decent Korean ghost/serial killer flick. Not really that scary, the ghost imagery is just more of what we've already seen in Ringu and Ju-On, but I think it's really more of a detective story than a horror film. The bittersweet ending is perfectly fitting. I'd recommend this for fans of Korean drama. Overall: 7/10

Izo. What an interesting movie. Izo tries so hard to be thought provoking and I think it falls just short of that goal. Lots of gore, fights, and some nice shots make up for it's shortcomings though. Could have done without many of the scenes but I think overall I'd give it a 3.5/5. Wonder what Miike will do with Halloween...

This is truly an impressive Japanese film from 1964 that weaves a tale of supernatural horror around a meddlesome mother-in-law trying to keep her slain son's wife by her side, to survive in a harsh land torn apart by feuding emperors. The single location for the story is a sea of grass, continuously swept with furious winds. The stark black and white lends a heavy atmosphere throughout. And yet it is poetic and beautiful.

There is a companion to this film, which I have yet to see: Yabu No Naka No Kuroneko (Black Cat from the Grove)

^Been meaning to see that one for some time.

A Tale of Two Sisters. Depressing quasi-ghost story, with a surprising twist near the end. Beautiful photography with minimal (and effective) "ghost" effects. Im Su-jeong gives a very strong performance in the lead role. I'll definitely be looking out for other films by director Kim Ji-woon. Overall: 8/10.

First of all, thier was deffinantly no chainsaws. The only reason this movie could be labled "The Japanese Chainsaw Massacre" is because of how the family is so messed up. The movie I thought was really slow untill the ending. Which wasnt bad at all. And it didnt have nearly the blood I thought it would.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

I was disappointed with this one. This is actually the first sequel to the "revenge" series (the first being Oldboy and the third being Mrs. Vengeance). I loved Oldboy, it's one of my favorite films. So, I was expecting a lot from this one. Yes, I did calm myself down before I put this baby in, but it didn't help. In Oldboy, you cared for the victim, and wanted him to get his revenge. Here, the protagonist was just dull, badly acted, and poorly written. I also didn't like the scenery in this flim. I usually could give less of a shit about the setting, as long as it stays to what the story is. But, there are exceptions. And this is one of them. In Oldboy, the sceneries were beautiful, and made me look around at what Asia is like. Here, it felt like they shot it in a Hollywood studio. It was pathetic! One last thing I had a problem with was the subtitles. I can never stand reading subtitles in a movie (except for The Passion of the Christ). Let alone, Oldboy was dubbed. At times I would drift away from the screen or go to the bathroom, and come back confused as hell. I wish they would've dubbed the film.

Just a sad disappointment of a film!

I've heard alot of bad things about this flick on review sites, but I liked it. I've noticed that most of the asian horror flicks seem to involve a ghost story, and so does this one. The ghost aspect isn't that original, but the way they use it is a nice twist. The movie was enjoyable and worth watching if you like asian horror films. I will warn you though, if you find a cell phone ringing to be annoying, it's gonna get to you in this flick.

Finally!!

A DIFFERENT asian ghost horror movie. Well, actually itīs more of a gangster comedy than a horror movie, but it still contains a long haired female ghost.

Both the story and humor is quite fun.

Summary taken from IMDB:

What we have here is a quartet of "goodfellas" that are looking for a former associate that has lifted a heavy sum of diamond off them. In the mean time, a rural family has come across the compressed pieces of carbon and don't feel like giving them up. Conflict ensues. As things go, the mob boys begin to witness strange things (like a girl's ghostly body hanging at a deserted school) that leads them to believe that the family is hiding more than just the diamonds....End of summary.

I really liked the actor (Chang Jung Lim) playing the lead role as the mob boss. He had a really cool look and seemed like a good actor. Hope to see him in other horror movies in the near future.:)

"Acacia" 5/10

This might be the saddest horror movie iīve ever seen.

Summary taken from IMDB:

"Acacia" stars Hye-jin Shim and Jin-guen Kim as a married couple unable to conceive a child. The husband is a doctor and the wife spends her time judging student art and knitting.Things change when the couple adopts six year old Jin-seong,a mysterious boy obsessed with drawing pictures of an acacia tree that he believes is the reincarnation of his dead mother.Soon the wife becomes pregnant and Jin-seong becomes more unhappy. On one rainy night he disappears mysteriously..."

- End of summary.

From the moment i saw the adopted boy i instantly felt sorry for him. He looked both cute and sad at the same time and i have a soft spot for excentric outsiders.

The whole time, i thought that the "Mom" acted oddly and unnaturally distant towards both her adopted child and later her own baby. I donīt know if thatīs just the way korean moms are when it comes to their children, or maybe she was just a bad actor?
But did NO ONE think about the newborn baby in the end??

Obviously a rather low budget horror movie about a hospital where a weird virus is spreading.

The idea is good, but "Kansen" is just too slow going and (probably because of the budget) not much happens untill the end.

A thing i found a little weird was this:

There are around 7 doctors at the hospital and you start by being informed that they are too few and got too much work..... But the hospital consists of only 6 rooms with about the same number of patients....

But does anyone UNDERSTAND "Visitor Q"? Or just the ending for that matter.

I sure didnīt.

Here's my interpretation of it... I may be wrong though. Since the film is, on the whole, about the dissolution of the family unit, the ending is about bringing the family unit back together in a new (albeit destructive) form. This is what I think Visitor Q was trying to do during his time with the family.

It was either Seance or A Tale of Two Sisters.

Seance - Good movie, great ending. 8/10

A Tale of Two Sisters - Absolutely brilliant! I absolutely loved this movie. 10/10

I watched this one and Audition pretty close together and honestly I liked Tale much better. GREAT film.

Cure 7/10

I liked it and the only reason I'm not rating it a little higher is because I found it really dragged near the end. Great story with a great ending, I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

Bullet Ballet

A typically bizarre film from Tsukamoto. Much more like Testuo than his other more recent films. Overall: 7/10

Kairo

This film is a masterpiece that is without a doubt Kurosawa's crowning achievement, and that is really saying a lot considering all of the excellent films he's made. This is perhaps the deepest horror film I've ever seen, dealing with themes of isolation, loneliness, death, and nihilism. You must see this film. Overall: 10/10

EDIT: Something I forgot to mention earlier... If you have a surround sound system, you will really get a lot out of the sound in this film. There are certain scenes where it will sound like the ghosts are whispering right in your ear. Awesome stuff.
