Greetings everyone this thread is about Godzilla and the 3 diffrent Godzilla movie series that have been made in the last 50 years by Toho studios in Japan. The 1st Series consicts of 15 Godzilla movies made from 1954-1975 It is called the Showa series. The 2nd series was made from 1984-1995 the series has 7 movies and is called the Heisei series. The 3rd series was made from 1999-2004 and is called the Millennium series. Here are the movie titled of each series. There are 28 movie titles in all.

26 Godzilla x MechaGodzilla 2002
27 Godzilla x Mothra x MechaGodzilla SOS 2003
28 Godzilla Final Wars 2004 50th Anniversary movie
The 1992 and 1993 movies are remakes and Tristars 1998 movie is not listed as it is not part of the series. The Godzilla movie series is the longest running movie series in movie history where all the movies are made by 1 movie studio. The James Bond series is 2nd with 20 movies made by Pinewood studios. I would like to know which Godzilla movie series is your fave. I like the Heisei series the most over all.

I never knew anything about dividing the Godzilla movies up like that, but from what I see I like the Showa series best.

Hi Moribund I grew up watching the Showa series movies 1954-1975 and when the Heisei series came along the series blew me away. The Heisei series in 5 of its 7 movies has Godzilla being twice his original hight and twice as powerful. The first 2 Heisei movies in 84-89 Godzilla is bigger then he was in 54-75 but by only 30 meters. Toho studios when making its 2nd and 3rd series made them so each series begins with the 1st movie in 1954. The Heisei series is 84-95 but the 84 movie is a direct sequel to the 1954 movie 30 years later Godzilla returns in 84. All the Heisei movies link up to each other to tell one story like Starwars movies. The Millennium series movies 1999 -2004 6 movies so far again Godzilla 2000 is a sequel to 54 and each of the Millennium movies are direct sequels to the original 1954 movie except Godzilla x Mothra x MechaGodzilla in 2003 as it is the sequel to the 2002 movie Godzilla x MechaGodzilla. It is intersting to note Godzillas hight is diffrent in each series. From 54-75 Godzilla was 50 meters tall and from 84-95 Godzilla was 80 meters and 100 meters tall then from 1999-2000 he is 55 meters in 2001 60 meters in 2002-203 55 meters in 2004 100 meters tall. I think the Heisei and Millennium movies are much much better than the old Showa series better made better special effects etc. Its a shame that the only Heisei movie that was released in the USA was the 1984 movie that was seen here in 1985. The other 6 movies came out on video not in theatres. The same thing happened with the Millennium series Godzilla2000 in 1999 came to theatres in the USA in 2000. The other movies did not come to the USA except for last years Godzilla Final Wars but thats because its world premier was in Hollywood november 29th 2004.

I have to admit that I liked the movie with Matthew Broderick. So sorry..........:( lol..............but I thought itwas pretty good.

I am generally not a fan of these movies. Thought they were just funny at best. Very, very bad effects. I'll have to admit they are classics though.:)

Hi nine9 as big of a Godzilla fan I am I have to say I really hate the 1970s Godzilla movies with a passion. The 70s Godzilla movies were being made to be like the Gamera movie. The Gamera movies were aimed for kids. Toho wanted kids to see Godzilla movies so in the 70s they began making Godzilla kiddie like movies where Godzilla is out to save the world rather than destroy it. Thsts the reason Toho quit making Godzilla movies in the 70s. They were losing money older people were not watching them so the series ended. I think Tristars so called Godzilla movie in 1998 is a good giant monster movie. However it is not a movie about Godzilla. Let me explain back in 1995 Toho made Godzilla vs. Destroyer it was supose to be the last Godzilla movie and Tristar wanted to buy the rights of Godzilla from Toho so they could make in American Godzilla movie. This was in 1996. Toho said NO so Tristar asked Toho if they could Lease the name Godzilla so they could title their movie Godzilla. Toho said ok but pay us 10Million dollars. Tristar agreed paid the 10 Mil. The monster could not look like Godzilla or have Godzillas trademark Atomic Ray. This was a rule Toho insisted upon. Tristar made a movie not about a mutated Dinosaur as Godzilla was and is but the Tristar monster was a mutated Igunana he was just a Lizard. Mathew Brodrick in the Tristar movie names the giant Igunana Igunanasarus. Not Godzilla. The movie was titled Godzilla and people thought they were really going to see a movie about Godzilla when there was no Godzilla in the movie. Fans were jipped imo. Toho studios has never and will never remake Godzilla just like they will never remake the 7 Samurai. Because the Tristar 98 movie was titled Godzilla as a means to sell tickets to lure fans to see the movie many fans were tricked into thinking they saw a Godzilla movie when infact they didnt. On a side note the director and producer of the 1998 so called Godzilla movie were fired. The 98 movie is probley the best and worst thing that happened. Its the worst in that that 98 movie almost killed the fandom here in the USA. Its the best thing in that after it was made. Toho Studios resurected the Godzilla and contracted to make a 3rd Godzilla series in 1999 starting with Godzilla2000. If I were you Nine9 I would try and watch the Heisei series or Millennium series as they rock and are not anything like the old Showa series of the 70s.

Hi nine9 you might find it intersting to know that there are 2 other movies that makes reffrence to Tristars 98 so called Godzilla monster. In 2001 Toho made the movie titled Godzilla mothra KingGhidora GMK for short. In the movie near the start of it there is a scene where about 100 people are listening to this one guy make a speach about how giant monsters have attacked including a monster that attacked NYC in the late twentith century. Then it shows one Jap asking his friend Was that Godzilla? His friend says No but they thought it was in America . But here in Japan we knew it wasnt. I love that scene in GMK as it proves that the 98 monster was never Godzilla. The other movie that takes it a step further is Godzilla Final Wars last years Godzilla movie. In the movie it has the 98 Tristar monster and Godzilla fight each other. As not to confuse fans the 98 monster is simply called Zilla and yes he is still a CGI monster. Anyway Godzilla and Zilla fight Godzilla kills Zilla in a minute. Well as they say in the Highlander movies There can only be just one. Your right I do know alot about Godzilla movies then again I have been watching them since 1966. And I try to make it each year to G-Fest a Godzilla convention held in Chicago.

Cool. My friend that was into these was from Eastern Europe. I think she was Chech. She never missed them if they were on TV. I think they were particularily popular there.

Hi nine9 I can believe that Godzilla is pretty popular in Eurpoe there was even a website called EuroGoji. The name was changed to GojiWorld. Its still the same place just their name was changed. Goji is short for Gojira and Gojira is what Godzilla is called in Japan. In english Gojira is Godzilla.

Many people dont really know what inspired the movie Godzilla to be made back in 1954. Well the movie was based on a real life event that took place back in march 1st 1954. The USA was conducting h-bomb tests at bikini island and had asked that all fishing boats stay a safe distance away as to not get effected by the blast. There was one fishing boat a Japanese troller named the Lucky Dragon #5. The boat was 87 miles away but the blast was bigger than what the USA thought it was going to be anyway the Lucky Dragon was stuck by a Radiation blast. Everyone on board the boat was nuked and riscue boats were sent out. around the same time a movie studio executive was on his way back from a trip where he was unsuccessful in securing visas for actors in the studios next movie. the young executive picked up his news paper and started to read it on the front page it said JAPANS 2nd ATOMIC BOMBING the article was about the incedent that took place when the Lucky Dragon boat was nuked and how both the USA and Japanese blamed each other for the incedent. After reading the write up the executive wrote down some words on some paper Atomic Bomb Dragon Rescue boat. When the Executive arrived in Tokyo he pitched an idea to his bosses about a movie where a radioactive monster comes out of the sea and attacks Tokyo. his boess loved the idea. The idea became Godzilla and the young executive who had the idea produced the movie Godzilla opened in november 3rd 1954. Godzilla was so sucessful the Producer made 21 more Godzilla movies from 1954-1995 22 in all his name was Tomoyuki Tanaka. Godzilla was a dinosaur who was awaken and was mutated by an H-Bomb and had absorbed the bomb radiation and became as powerful as an H-bomb. In the move Godzilla destroys all of Tokyo and is able to emit a beam or ray of radiation that can destroy anything. Aftet Tanakas death in 1996 a 3rd Godzilla series was made that started in 1999 and continues to this day.

In Japan the very 1st giant monster movie that was made and used man in suit a.k.a. suitmation was not Godzilla as many might think so. As a matter of fact the 1st man in suit monster movie was Kingkong Appears on Edo made in 1938. Actor Sanshiro Sagra wore the Kong suit. Then 16 years later Toho made Godzilla in 1954 and that was the 2nd man in suit giant monster movie. The man who designed the Godzilla suit was Teizo Toshimoto he also helped make the Kong suit in 1938. Suitactor Harou Nakajima wore the 200lb Godzilla suit. Nakajima was Godzilla from 1954-1972 the 1st 12 Godzilla movies. Nakajima said when making Godzilla back in 1954 they could only film 5 minutes at a time because the suit was so hot inside he was sweating buckets of water. Harou Nakajima played other giant monsters in his career in 1956 he was Rodan and in 1957 Varan in 58 He was the giant Robot Mogera in the movie the Mysterians and he was the monster Baragon in Frankenstien conquers the World 1965 and he was Gaira the green Gargantua in War of the Gargantuas 1966. Later Nakajima was Gezora the giant Squid in Yog monster from outer space 1970. After 1972 acter who wore the Godzilla suit in 1973 1974 1975 were Shinji Takai in 73 Isao Zushi in 74 and Tohru Kawai in 75. From 1984-1995 Ken Satsuma was Godzilla in the next 7 movies. And suit actor Tsutomu Kitagawa wore the Godzilla suit from 1999-2004 . Of course the Godzilla suit was far more advanced in the 80s & 90s and very very expeisive costing up to $80.000 to make the suit. An averge suit cost about $60.000 to make while a promtional suit is $20.000 to $30.000. The suits today are very high tech and are more than just a suit its almost something you opperate from the inside.

LOL trust me return the guy who wore the suit in Tristars fakezilla98 movie was a nobody LOL LOL. However the guy who wore the Godzilla suit in Godzilla Final Wars suitactor Tsutomu Kitagawa did kick Fakezillas butt when Fakezilla98 and Godzilla battled each other in Godzilla Final Wars. CGI monster vs. Suitmation monster intersting scene and yes Godzilla killed fakezilla98 in a minute.

That would be something to see...considering I [shamefully] actually enjoyed "Fakezilla" [as we are now calling it:P]

Hi Return I enjoyed watching the Fakezilla98 movie as far as a giant monster movie it was ok not bad but as far it being called a Godzilla movie it sucked bigtime. I think and many other giant monster movie fans think it was more like the Beast from 20.000 Fathoms remake combined with a Varan remake. The monster was also able to go under ground like Baragon. Varan is a 1957 movie the name Varan comes from the name Varanus meaning Monitor Lizard or komodo Dragon. Baragon was a monster who has been in 3 movies he burrows underground. The Beast from 20.000 Fathoms was a 1953 movie about a giant dinosarur called the Rhedosaur who attacked NYC. The 98 Tristar monster seems to be a mix of all 3 monsters.

Here is a small list of unmade Godzilla movie projects that Toho studios never made for one reason or another.
1 Godzilla vs. the SmogMonster sequel in 1972 idea was shot down
2 Godzilla vs. the Gargantua one of the Gargantuas or another Gargantua fights Godzilla
3 Godzilla vs. the Devil in this movie Satan would appear in diffrent forms and fight Godzilla
4 Godzilla vs. Bagan this idea should have been made no doubt about it.
5 unmade remakes KingKong vs. Godzilla Ted Turner owned the rights to Kong and wanted to much money from Toho so this movie was not made.
The 1995 Godzilla vs. Destroyer movie seems to be 2 unmade movie ideas mixed to make 1 monster. Destroyer seems to be like the Devil and Bagan ideas put together
The idea of a remake of Destroy All Monsters and the idea of a Godzilla vs. Godzilla 98 movie seem to have merged into Godzilla Final Wars. Godzilla does battle Fakezilla98 in Godzilla Final Wars and like Destroy All Monsters over 10 monsters attck countrys around the world.. There are tons of unmade Godzilla movie ideas and some will never be made like a Godzilla vs. Gamera which fans would love to see.

Ok here is what Godzillas fanbase is and like Godzilla its big
according to Toho the fanbase for Godzilla has grown in 50 years to 1 billion fans world wide. This figure seems about right if you go by the number of ticket sales over the 50 years and 28 movies keeping in mind that these movies are seen all over the world.
You have to undestand back in 1954 the movie Godzilla was an international success and it made millions of dollars about 10 times of what it cost to make. Godzilla hit his peak in the 60s where there was so much demand to see his movies 8 movies were made in that one decade alone. Godzilla movies have been seen in Japan Thailand Australia Mexico Brazil Canada America France Germany Poland Italy Spain Turkey England Belgium Holland Argentine Sweden Colombia Czechoslovia Taiwan Egypt
Cuba Yogoslavia. Well these are the countrys I can remember there might be more. On a side not in 50 years in Japan the number of people there match the number of fans that exist now. In 50 years in Japan 1billion people have sen Godzilla movies which matches the number of current fans world wide present day. Imo Godzilla is like any other well liked movie monster like Frankenstien Dracula Wolfman Mummy. They may have been around longer than Godzilla and seem to maintain a fanbase. Any movie monster who can maintain a fanbase for 50 years and longer cant be that bad. Any movie goer fan or not must ask themself what is it about these monsters that keep fans watching their movies decade after decade.

Just wondering...

Gojira, have you played the Godzilla : Destroy All Monsters Melee video game? Im not sure what ststems itz for, but I own it for Gamecube. Itz awesome, you can chose from alot of different monsters [Im best with Rodan:cool:], including Orga from Godzilla 2000, and 2 versions of Big G, 3 if you count Mechagodzilla [Fakezilla is not involved]

Hi Return no I have not played the Destroy All Monsters video game or any of the Godzilla video games. I am glad they make them but I am not much of a gamer. Back in the 70s my family owned a few arcades and I know how addicting gaming can be and when I was in my late teens games were of no interst to me. but I do play the slots at Vegas every Xmas at least you have a chance of winning money lol. There are alot of Godzilla fans my age and yonger who really enjoy the video games. I am excited about this new Godzilla Chess Set that came out I do love playing Chess.

Every year at G-fest this Godzilla convention held in Chicago they have a major gaming contest on this giant 12 ft long 7 ft wide game board people will play for hours at a time. I think these people are nuts. I am hoping to go to this years G-Fest in July and pick up a movie poster or 2 and watch a Japanese monster movie with english subtitles. I have a neice and nephew who like video games and Godzilla I was thinking about getting them one of these new Godzilla video games. Last thing I bought my neice was one of the original Godzilla movie posters from Japan.

Damn you lucky Bastard Moribund !! I wish I could go see it with you. I also heard the 1954 Godzilla movie will be playing at a convention in Boston I think. I first saw Gojira a.k.a. Godzilla back in 2001 at G-Fest at a near by theatre. The basic diffrence between the original Japanese 1954 Godzilla movie and the USA 1956 movie Godzilla King of the Monsters is that the 54 movie is 97 minutes long and is a much darker movie. Godzilla King of the Monsters is about 79 minutes long and has actor Raymond burr in the movie. In the 1954 movie they say H-Bomb while the USA version is waterd down some and the term atomic bomb is used instead.

What you find out in the 1954 Gojira movies is that Dr. Serizawa is being funded by the Nazis for his research work. Later serizawa invents the Oxygen bomb which is just as powerful as a nuclear bomb. In the USA version Serizawa is portryed as a guy who went to college with Raymond Burr and both are good friends. The movie itself was inspired by a real life event that happened a few months before where a Japanese fishing boat had been nuked by an h-bomb at bikini island. The name of the boat was the Lucky Dragon. Let me know what you think of the movie. I dont think you should have trouble reading the subtitles.

Last year Rialto Pictures was showing the movie in theatres across the country as one film cretic put it Godzilla 1954 is the Citizen Kane of Giant Monster movies.

They had the original [Or possibly the 1st USA one] set to play on TV last weekend, but at the last minute, they changed it to Godzilla vs Mothra, which I own [And dont like much]. I was all psyched, but then the annoncer called out the movie, it sucked:(

Hi Return a couple of tidbits about the 1964 mothra vs. Godzilla movie. In the original movie there is no Fronteer Missles that fire on Godzilla. However in the USA version there are and the USA version is a minute longer. Most Godzilla movies its the original Jap version thats better but in this case some fans think the USA version is better because of the fronteer missles I say they are about the same. If you compare Mothra vs. Godzilla 1964 to Godzilla vs. Mothra 1992 remake the 1992 movie is much better and makes the 1964 movie seem like its a peice of shit lol. I like the idea of Mothra having an evil twin in the remake also in the remake Mothra and her twin Battra have lasers and the Mothra twins the 2 little girls called the twin farries are called the Cosmos in the 1992 movie.

The remake of Godzilla vs. Mothra in 1992 is awesome. I never much cared for Mothra vs. Godzilla 1964 but the remake in 1992 wow great movie indeed and I hate Mothra. Another movie I dont care for is the 1974 movie Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla. I am glad it was remade in 1993 when I saw the remake I was blown away. MechaGodzilla in the 1993 remake was 70 meters taller than he was in the 74&75 movies. He stood at 120 meters and Godzilla was 100 meters tall twice his original hight. A new Rodan and a new version of Godzillas son called babyGodzilla. This whole movie was awesome from start to finish. BabyGodzilla was in 2 other Godzilla movies but bigger in size in 94 he was called LittleGodzilla at 30 meters then he was 41 meters in his 3rd movie being called Godzilla Jr.

Well, you're not alone. I did find myself enjoying it. The problem was, it wasn't Godzilla. I wouldn't have minded changes being made. For better of for worse, any American Godzilla should be different from Toho's version or all you've done is transplanted him. But this wasn't an American Godzilla, this was a whole new mosnter entirely. Either they should have made him more like the original, or given the creature a different name and let it stand on its own. It's actually a well designed monster on its own.

Hi Mr Shape in Tristars 1998 so called Godzilla movie the monster was given a name and Mathew Brodrick said the species of this giant mutated Igunana was Igunanasarus. Igunanasarus is what it was named in the movie. There are 2 other Godzilla movies that were made in later years that prove that Tristars Igunanasarus is not Godzilla. In 2001 Toho made the movie Godzilla Mothra KingGhidora in this movie there is a discussion about giant monsters who have attacked citys around the world. One monster was said to have attacked NYC in the late 20th century and the USA thought it was Godzilla but they were mistaken it was just another monster. Thats what is said in GMK. The other Godzilla movie that proves the Tristar 98 monster was not Godzilla was last years Godzilla Final Wars in 2004 where Godzilla and the Tristar 98 monster meet and fight Godzilla kills the USA 98 monster in a minute. As they say in the Highlander movies There can only be just one.

Who cares, Godzilla is a fictional character, they said that was Godzilla then its Godzilla. Plain and simple. By the way its a completely different story so it might have been some other monster.

Hi Classic your right Godzilla is a fictional movie monster but keep in mind the idea or inspiration for Godzilla was based on a real life event that took place March of 1954. Thats when a japanese fishing boat named the Lucky Dragon was nuked by an h-bomb by accident. Rescue ships were sent to save those on board the Dragon. A movie executive had read about the incident and came up with the idea of a giant monster that was mutated by radiation and that attacked Tokyo. As far as Tristars 1998 so called Godzilla movie that movie is a diffrent type of creature than Godzilla was or is. The creature in the 98 movie is an Igunanasarus which is said in the movie. There are 2 other movies that say the 98 monster is not Godzilla and infact Godzilla himself fights the 98 Tristar monster in Godzilla Final Wars and kills it in 1 minute.

Hi Classic I agree that Tristar conned alot of people into thinking that their 1998 monster was Godzilla. What happened was that Tristar leased the name Godzilla from Toho to title their movie. Mind you Tristar did not buy the rights to Godzilla they just leased the name not the character. The 1998 Tristar movie was both the worst thing that could happen to Godzilla and the best thing that could have happened to Godzilla.

Let me explain back in 1995 Toho studios made what was to be their very last Godzilla movie titled Godzilla vs. Destroyer. After the movie was made Tristar leased the Godzilla name from Toho in 1996. Tristar opened their movie in 1998. Most who saw the movie felt cheated and ripped off many fans and regular movie goers thought they were going to see a movie about Godzilla and they didnt. This just about Killed the Godzilla fandom in America.

What happened next was that the Tristar movie was being shown all over the world and when it was seen in Japan the Japanese movie goers also hated the movie. Toho studios did not want the world to remember Godzilla as what the Tristar monster was so Toho resurected the Godzilla series in 1999.

In 1999 Toho contracted to make 3 new Godzilla movies starting off with Godzilla2000Millennium and then Godzilla x Megagirus in 2000and in 2001 Godzilla Mothra KingGhidora.. Had it not been for the 1998 Tristar movie Toho may have never brought Godzilla back. There have been another 3 Godzilla movies that have been made after Godzilla Mothra KingGhidora. The last one was Godzillas 50th Anniversary movie in 2004 Godzilla Final Wars.

Classic I collect alot of Godzilla movie memorabilia what do you have?

Bloody Tits kinky and commas oh boy yahoo!! LOL By the way guys in all my postings I have only mentioned one giant lizard movie. That would be Tristars 1998 movie that has the giant mutated Igunana called Igunanasarus. Now I have posted alot about a certain mutated dinosaur that being Godzilla. But giant lizard movies are Varan 1957 The giant gila monster 1959. LOL next thing I will see is someone claiming Rodan is a movie about a giant bird. Remember Rodan is a giant prehistoric flying retile a giant Pteranadon. The Giant Claw on the other hand is a movie about a giant monster bird. The name Varan itself comes from the name Varanus meaning Monitor Lizard or Komodo Dragon.

Well good for you Extr3mist its nice to know that your standing correct. Nothing more important than good posture. Just look at Quasimodo he didnt have good posture and he delopted a hunched back. Now back to the thread on Godzilla many people have asked how many direct sequels are there to the original 1954 Godzilla movie. Well here are the direct sequels
Godzilla Raids Again 1955 was a direct sequel to Godzilla 1954 and Godzilla Returns 1984 was the 2nd direct sequel to the 1954 classic. The 3rd direct sequel was Godzilla 2000 and the 4th direct sequel was Godzilla x Megagirus then Godzilla Mothra KingGhidora was another direct sequel. The next 2 direct sequels were Godzilla x MechaGodzilla in 2002 and Godzilla Final Wars in 2004. All but 1 of the movies in the Shinsei Godzilla series were direct sequels except the 2003 movie Godzilla x Mothra x MechaGodzilla. So lets recap 1955 1984 then 5 of 6 Shinsei movies from 1999-2004 were direct sequels to the 1954 movie. That means there are 7 direct sequels. Now movies that were follow up movies to the direct sequels are Kingkong vs. Godzilla in 1962 was a direct follow up movie to Godzilla Raids Again in 1955. The next follow up movie was Godzilla vs. Biollante in 1989. The 1989 movie was a followup to Godzilla Returns in 1984. The 3rd and last direct follow up movie is Godzilla x Mothra x MechaGodzilla in 2003 as it is the follow up to Godzilla x MechaGodzilla in 2002.

It has come to my attention that some here were wondering how certain Japanese monsters got their names. Thats a good question something I use to wonder myself. Here is what I know about the monsters names. Godzilla got his names from a guy who worked at Toho studios he was named after an employee. The employees name was a Mr. Gojira Gojira traslated to english is Godzilla. The 1st monster Godzilla fought in Godzilla Raids Again 1955 was a monster named Angilas the Japanese spelling is Angirasu. Angirasu/Angilas was named after the Dinosaur Ankylosaur. Angilas was a giant Ankylosaurus. The monster Varan whos name in Japanese is Baran is a giant Komodo Dragon seen that the name Varan comes from the latin word Varanus meaning monitor Lizard or komodo Dragon.
The name Mothra is Mosura in Japanese and Mothra is just a giant Moth of course that in the movies has a few powers. Rodan is Radon in Japanese and like Angilas Rodan is a prehistoric Dinosaur a giant Pteranodon. KingGhidora is spelled KinguGidora in Japanese the monster is a giant 3 headed flying Dragon that emits gravity beams from its 3 mouths. The giant Robot Mogera is a Robot that can burrow underground like a mole hence the name Mogera.

The name Ebera is spelled Eibra in english Eibra is a giant lobster and the name Minira in english is Minya the name of Godzillas adpoted son in Son of Godzilla. In japanese the name is pronounced Mee-Nee-Ra in english its Mean-Ya The name Kumonga is translated to Speiga in english Kumonga is a giant spider and the name Kamakirasu is translated to Giamantis Gimantis is of course a giant praying mantis. The grey dinosaur named Gorosarusu or in english Gorosarus is a giant Allosaurus. the monster Baragon was named Baragon because Toho just thought the name sounded cool.

The name Hedora means pollution in Japanese so no doubt Hedora is the Smogmonster in Godzilla vs. the Smogmonster 1971. Then there is Gaigan translated in english i Gigan he is a giant Cyborg from space and then Megaro in english is Megalon who is a giant beele or Roach cyborg from earth. Then there is JetJaguar a robot that can grow to the size of other giant monsters Jet Jaguar in Japanese is JetoJagua. Then there is KingU Sesa in english is KingSeesar who is a giant Dog deity and Titanosarusu another fictional Dinosaur in english the name is Titanosarus. Manda is a giant sea serpent and Maga a giant Walrus. Then MekaGojira is spelled MechaGodzilla in english MechaGodzilla is a giant robot built in Godzillas image.

Thats enough for the Japanese monsters name Game for now i will continue with part 2 another day. I will start with monsters from the 1980s to present.

Gojira
02-02-2005, 04:21 PM
This is part 2 of the name game when it comes to naming the Toho monsters. In 1984 and in 1989 Toho made a couple of Godzilla movies the 1989 movie the 84 sequel introduced fans to a new monster named Biorante translated in english its Biollante and Biollante was a giant plant a rose in fact and in 1991 there was a new type of robot called MekaGidora or in english MechaGhidora a giant robot made in the image of KingGhidora.

Also in 1991 there was Gojirasarusu or in english Godzillasarus it was Godzilla before he was mutated by the H-Bomb. In 1992 a new monster named Batora was introduced Batora was Mothra evil twin Batora in english is Battra. In 1993 there was a new version of Godzillas son named BabeGojira in english BabyGodzilla. And there was a new version of Rodan called FuaiyaRadon or FireRodan in english was introduced again 1993. Rodan is again a giant prehistoric Pteronodon. In 1994 there was SupesuGojira in english SpaceGodzilla and LittleGodzilla this was BabyGodzilla just a little bit taller. Also in 1994 there was G-ForceMogera an updated version of Mogera.

In 1995 there was Desutoroia translated in english as Destroyah or Destroyer. Again little Godzilla had grown to be Gojira Jr or Godzilla Jr in 1995. The monster Destroyer was a crab like sea creature almost microscopic that had been feeding on the remains of the Oxygen bomb that had killed Godzilla in 1954. This mutated many of these small crablike creatures and caused them to grow and unite as 1 very big monster named Destroyer because it had the same power of the Oxyge destroyer bomb.
In 1999 a new monster was named Oruga in english its spelled Orga. Orga is a bodyless Alien that absorbed Godzillas DNA. Godzillas DNA is called Orginizer G1 cells after the Alien robbed Godzillas cells it was named Orga after Godzillas cells or DNA. After it took the cells the Alien took on this ugly form. In 2000 another classic 1950s monster was revamped and it was Megaguron a prehistoric insect Rodan ate in the 1956 classic Rodan in the 2000 the Megagurons grew to adulthood and became Megagirus a prehistoric flying Dragonfly. MechaGodzilla was revamped in 1993 and in 2002 and 2003 Mothra was revamped in 1992 1996 as RainbowMothra in 1997 as AquaMothra in 1998 as ArmoredMothra and in Godzilla Final Wars FireMothra. Gigan was also revamped in Godzilla Final Wars along with Rodan Hedora Kumonga Kamkiras Minya Manda KingSeesar. There was a new monster in 2004 named MonsterX who later trasforms into KaiserGhidora.
I think you now have a good idea of how it is Toho names their monsters and why. I left out a few names the entire list of all the monsters is pretty long. I am sure you can guess without knowing Japanese which name this monster belongs to
KinguKongu well in english its KingKong but somehow I think you knew that.

GODZILLA MOVIE POSTERS
I was just looking at my Godzilla movie poster collection and I noticed something in the last 13 Godzilla movie posters that are not in the 1st 15 Godzilla movie posters. From the very 1st poster in 1954 to 1975 those first 15 posters all have Godzilla emitting his atomic ray from his mouth. The last 13 Godzilla movie posters from 1984- 2004 dont have Godzilla shotting his ray from his mouth. I take that back there is 1 poster in 1991 Godzilla vs. KingGhidora which has Godzilla emitting his ray.

Style A vs. Style B Posters
earlier this year one of my friends came over and was looking at my poster collection and asked me why in some of the posters you could see on the border of the posters music notes written on them. I looked and I had seen the music notes myself on the posters and I saw not all of the Japanese posters had them.
I looked in a couple of my Japanese poster reffrence books and saw all the posters and I saw that the Style A posters had the music notes on them and Style B posters did not. I also noticed the release posters had the notes. I have been asked that same question a couple of other times and now I can explain why that is.

Another intersting fact about Style A vs. style B posters is that Style A are called Advance posters this means they might print for example 500 posters while Style B posters known as Theatre posters or photo posters might have a run of 1000 posters. What this means to a collector and is for a fact is that because there are less Style A posters they will be worth more because they will beharder to locate. The style B posters or theatre posters will be easier to find and a bit less expensive maybe 50 dollars less or maybe 100 dollars less this depends on the poster. As a collector its hard to choose which poster to get Style B may look better while Style A does not but keep in mind Style A is worth more. Like I said sometimes its hard to choose.

Knife_fight most of the Godzilla songs and music were written and composed by Akira Ifukube. Other song/music writters were Takeyuki Hattori who wrote the music for Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla in 1994 and Reijiro Koroku wrote the music for Godzilla 1984/1985 and in 1989 Koichi Sugiyama wrote the music for Godzilla vs. Biollante. The music for Godzilla Mothra KingGhidora GMK for short in 2001 was written by Kow Otani and the music for Godzilla x MechaGodzilla in 2002 and its sequel Godzilla x Mothra x MechaGodzilla SOS in 2003 was written by Michiru Oshima. I think Biollante looks like what it is supose to be nothing more than a giant monster Rose. But Biollante in its 2nd form looks more like a giant monster man eating plant. Pasta dish? If your loking for a DVD of MonsterZero why not get one from Video Daikaiju uncut in original form not like the USA cut and dubbed versions. that's quite a bit of info that doesn't answer my question. What I was asking is if you like Blue Oyster Cult's song "Godzilla" or not. I assumed you'd be the BOC's biggest fan since they have that song.
And I wasn't really asking about the music that is actually in the Godzilla movies, I meant songs about Godzilla, similar to the BOC song.

I'm personally not a big big BIG fan of the BOC song, but it is part of the whole Godzilla "world," so it exists happily within my perspective, if you know what I mean. I do recall a long long time ago (mid-80's?) I think Channel 5 in Los Angeles had one of their Godzilla marathons, and they used that song for the commercial break intros. That was a good time, back when they used to have all-day Godzilla marathons on TV. Day after Thanksgiving was when I think they used to do it.

Also, back when the song was new, 500 promotional copies were sent to Famous Monsters magazine, and they cleverly designed a questionnaire contest (read: "market research poll"), offering a free copy of the single to the first 500 to send in the form.

I dont think theres is a Godzilla fan in the world who doesnt like BOC Godzilla song. There is a song that is sung at the end of the original 1984 Godzilla movie mind you not the 1985 USA version but the uncut 84 version. You hear a woman singing this awesome song about Godzilla. IMO it rivals the BOC Godzilla song.

Filmmaker2 If you have seen the 1965 movie Godzilla vs. Monster here is a bit of trivia on the movie the scene when Fuji and Glenn are walking around Planet X in the Halls then go into a room and see a Ms. Namikawa lookalike on planet x then another look alike. It was actress Kumi Mizuno who played the part and then you saw her on Planet X the other look alike was her twin actress Mie Hama.

filmmaker2
02-07-2005, 07:00 PM
I'm assuming Mie Hama played the "twin" in the over-the shoulder shots (from behind)? Because when you see the two twins from the front, they both look like they're played by Kumi Mizuno, in a split screen image.......does that sound about right?

I like that song in the uncut Godzilla 1984; that's a neat song.

Gojira
02-07-2005, 09:13 PM
Hi filmmaker2 when you see Kumi on Planet X holding a Box and another girl who looks just like her holding a diffrent box that was not split screen. Toho just asked Kumi Mizunos twin sister Mie Hama to play the other girl on planet X. Many people didnt even know Kumi and Mie were twin sisters at the time. Anyway thats how Toho pulled off that effect. Mie was not credited in the movie but Kumi was. If you really want to know about Kumi in MonsterZero it was rumored that Kumi and American actor Nick Adams were romanticly invloved. Kumi denys it but others say diffrent. The last movie I saw Kumi Mizuno in was Godzilla x MechaGodzilla she played the PrimeMinister of Japan. That movie came out in 2002.

Filmmaker2 some of these Toho actresses back in the 60s werent so bad looking a couple of them were in theJames Bond 007 movie You only live twice in 1967. Actress Mie Hama was in KingKong Escapes 1967 as Madam Piranah. Hama played the part of Kissy Suzuki Bonds love interst in You only live twice. Mie Hama was also in Playboy in June 1967 issue. Hama was seen mostly nude in the 1968 movie Night of the Seagull. she was also considerd the Bridget Bardot of Japan. The other famous Toho actress who was in You only live Twice was Akiko Wakabayashi she played the part of Priness Salno in Ghidora the 3 HeadedMonster 1964 and she was Aki the spy who helps Bond in You Only live Twice. I think all 3 actresses Kumi Mizuno Mie Hama and Akiko wakabayasi were in the movie The Lost World of Sinbad 1963. Intersting how the worlds 2 longest running movie series Godzilla and James Bond are linked by the actresses who worked in both movie series.

Oh, I think they were all quite lovely, all those 60's Godzilla girls.

Now starts the formless ramble. When I was growing up, you know, the older Godzilla films (pre-1970 and thereabouts) were the only ones yet made, so I grew up with those, and have a special place in my heart for all of them. They would run on TV fairly often. All the neighborhood kids loved that stuff.

Someone called me a while back and said that a bunch of Godzilla films were playing down at a local theatre. I wasn't able to see them all. But I did see two, "Monster Zero" and "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster." It was absolutely unreal. I never thought I would have the chance to see these two projected, as they are definitely old favorites.

I have a laserdisc of "Kingu Kong tai Gojira" which is un-flipping-believable, it's a Toho release and not subtitled, so I have no idea what they're all saying and have to guess, but that movie is a solid production, very lavish, and the sound is in surround stereo. When Godzilla appears and roars, it nearly blows the speakers out.

Gojira

Hi Filmmaker2 I also grew up watching the older Godzilla movies in theatres on up through the 70s and ending with Terror of MechaGodzilla in 1975. Then there was a 10 year gap before we in america had the chance to see another G movie in 1985 Godzilla the Legend Reborn was the title. Many fans at first thought it might be a sequel to Terror of MechaGodzilla but as you saw the movie it was infact a sequel to the original 1954 movie. I was 24 by this time. And few years passed and in 1989 a sequel to the 84/85 movie was made Godzilla vs. Biollante then the 91-92-93-94-95 movies were all made none came to the USA. but once fans learned of the movies they saw them. This new set of 7 Godzilla movies was AWESOME. They made the old 60s & 70s Godzilla movies look like shit. The updated monsters were Godzilla Rodan Ghidora Mothra and a new version of Godzillas son. and Mogera. The new monsters were Biollante Godzillasarus Battra and Destroyer even the Mothra Farries were updated. I find it intersting to see young kids who grew up on the Heisei series movies 84-95 now getting to see a 3rd Godzilla series the Shinsei series movies 1999-2004. I am lucky enough to have seen all 3 Godzilla movie series growing up. I am in my mid 40s now and there are only a few of the old Showa godzilla movies imo that are still good today. 1954-1975=Showa

My fave Showa movie is the 1954 Godzilla movie and 1968 Destroy all Monsters. My fave Hesiei movie is Godzilla vs. Destroyer 1995 and then Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 1993 remake
Of the 3rd series the Shinsei series my faves are Godzilla Mothra KingGhidora 2001 movie and Godzillax Mechagodzilla 2002 movie. Now i am going to go see if I can locate an old 1967 july issue of Playboy that has Mie Hama in it.

Hi bloody_ribcut I hate to tell you this but many diehard Godzilla fans think Godzilla vs. Megalon 1973 and Godzillas Revenge 1969 are the worst Godzilla movies ever made. Maybe you should try and watch Godzilla movies that were made after 1975 like Godzilla vs. Destroyer 1995 or the remake of Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla in 1993 or Godzilla vs. KingGhidora 1991 or Godzilla x MechaGodzilla 2002 or Godzilla x Mothra x MechaGodzilla SOS 2003. There are many many other really Good Godzilla movies out there.

Bloody_Ribcut thats ok if you like Godzilla vs. Megalon but have you seen the other Godzilla movies that have been made after Godzilla vs. Megalon? If not I suggest you give them a try you might find out they are better. Here is a list of Godzilla movies made after Godzilla vs. Megalon 1973.
Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 1974
Terror of MechaGodzilla 1975
New Series
Godzilla Returns 1984 a.k.a. Godzilla 1985 in the USA
Godzilla vs. Biollante 1989
Godzilla vs. KingGhidora 1991
Godzilla vs. Mothra 1992 remake
Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 1993 remake
Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla 1994
Godzilla vs. Destroyer 1995
Latest Movies
Godzilla 2000 1999
Godzilla x Megagirus 2000
Godzilla Mothra KingGhidora 2001
Godzilla x MechaGodzilla 2002
Godzilla x Mothra x MechaGodzilla SOS 2003
Godzilla Final Wars 2004 not yet on VHS or DVD
You will note Tristars 1998 so called Godzilla movie is not listed thats because it is not a movie about Godzilla. Anyway give some of these later Godzilla movies a try and let me know what you think.

Gojira
03-21-2005, 09:25 AM
Well Classic you may like Godzilla vs. Megalon but I bet you would love the Heisei Godzilla movies better and the Shinsei Godzilla movies. Heisei movieswere made from 1984-1995 and Shinsei movies were made from 1999-2004.

Yes I would, but that doesn't make a difference, I still like it.

Gojira
03-22-2005, 06:32 AM
Well Classic there is a big diffrence between liking a movie and loving a movie. I am one of the biggest Godzilla fans around and I think the 70s Godzilla movies are pretty lame imo. The Godzilla movies that were made between 1984-1995 are pretty awesome seen Godzilla is twice his original hight and twice as powerful in those movies. Then you have this 3rd Godzilla series where Godzilla is 3 diffrent hights in the movies in 4 movies he is 55 meters tall in another movie he is 60 meters tall and in a 6th movie he is 100 meters tall. It is a shame that the Godzilla movies made from 1989-1995 were not seen in the USA otherwise I think movie goers would not think Godzilla movies stopped in 1985. At least the 1st Godzilla movie of the Millennium/Shinsei series Godzilla2000 was seen here in the USA and Godzilla Final Wars had its world premier in the USA in 2004 but no national release. I also find it amazing that to this day some movie goers think that Tristars 1998 so called Godzilla movie was a Godzilla movie. Godzilla is a mutated Dinosaur that has an atomic ray the Tristar 98 monster was not a Dinosaur it was a mutated Igunana that just invaded NYC and was killed by missles. Tristar leased the name Godzilla from Toho studios to title their movie. This fooled the public into thinking they were going to see a Godzilla movie. IMO this movie was like the Beast from 20.000 Fathoms in 1953 or the Giant Gilamonster 1959. I think fans should go see Godzilla Final Wars last years Godzilla movie. In it you see Tristars 1998 so called Godzilla fight Godzilla Godzilla kills the Tristar monster in a minute.

Do you have any idea of how incredibly weird it is to know as much as you do about one thing. I'm a ridiculously big Clint Eastwood fan, I know his birthday, where he was born, all the movies he worked on,I've got all his movies ect. ect. you know the normal obsessed fan stuff, but you are on a whole other level with Godzilla LOL.

I can relate on the Eastwood thing my dad was a big Clint Eastwood fan he took us to go see all of Clints movies and he was big James Bond 007 fan. It was a fair tradeoff I went to see his movies and he would take me to see horror movies.

(A "squid" is a rampant fan of something--someone who knows way more about a special topic than the avereage person is likely to. Quite often, squids love science fiction, horror, and fantasy entertainment.)

I think it's great that there's so much neat stuff for people to get into and learn about...for every genre there's subgenres and subgenres beyond those...and a squid or two for every one of these categories who knows the facts inside and out.

You know, before all these people were able to network and pool resources like they can now, lots of folks had memories of movies they couldn't identify and never would identify...you know, things they saw as a kid that really made an impression on them, but because they didn't know the title the films simply became vague and haunting memories.

Now, everyone knows so much, and everyone is communicating so much, that it's genuinely difficult to ask "What movie did I see when I was five??" without SOMEONE knowing what it was, or being able to figure out what it was with a little bit of research.

Like someone was talking about Gerry Anderson shows a while back, and noted that the puppet heads for the characters became more and more proportionately correct as time went on.

"Yeah, there's a reason why that was, too," I said, and then launched into explaining why. I happily realized that I, too, was a squid, just like all the other squids.

Origin of the term "SQUID"

Now supposedly this term originated in the makeup effects community, and the legend goes on to say that a particular artist coined this term back in the late 80's, or thereabouts. The term has been VERY commonly used in this neck of the woods in the last fifteen years or so.

The idea behind it, supposedly, is that a "squid" was the sort of person that, if they saw a really rare magazine or photo or sculpture or some such desireable item, they would be unable to keep their hands off it, and would suddenly seem to grow tentacles that would reach out and grab for the thing. Poetically, that's what the term means.

Now at first, this was treated as an elitist term that was used to separate "fans" from "professionals." It became used as a light insult.

But this usage of the term was short-lived. Why? Because the artist types using it realized that it was essentially wrong to criticize a fan for being a fan, when in fact that very quality of fandom is what got them wherever they were professionally in the first place, in a sense. (Fandom = love for the genre(s) = what we all care about anyway, so why be condescending.)

So within a few years, the usage of the term mutated to mean "any really devoted fan." Gradually in the makeup effects community it became an emblem of pride (albeit a humorously embarassing one) to call oneself a "squid."

I like the terms Godzilla Freak KaijuFan and KaijuMaster when it comes to Japanese Monster Movies. But most online friends and also at conventions just call me Toho54 which is also cool. I cant wait til may there will be a 1950s Scifi filmfest where I live and the guy who holds the event Jay Duncan contacted Rialto Pictures and booked Gojira 1954 as one of the featured films for the fest. Gojira a.k.a. Godzilla 1954 movie the movie will be dubbed in Japanese with english subtitles. The festival cordnator asked me if I would introduce the movie and make a small speach about it telling why and how this movie was made etc. As I said I cant wait til may 27th-29th. The movie will be showing at the Chamizal Theatre in El Paso Texas.

I know it has nothing to do with Monster movies I'm not much of a monster movie fan and I know very little about them, but when we talk about movies in general they call me that because I know alot more about movies than they do. The CEO thing that they call me stands for Clint Eastwood Obsession because I'm a big fan of his I've got his movie posters, books, movies ect. so that's what it came from and they just starting calling me that whenever we talked about any kind of movie whether it would've been Clint Eastwood or otherwise.

Hi ClassicHorror no I have not seen Godzilla Final Wars if you read my older posts you will see I have never said that I have. Alot of my friends saw the Godzilla Final Wars world premier at Graumans Chinese Theatre in Hollywood last november 29th . I was hoping Godzilla Final Wars would be booked at the Pickwick Theatre in july this year so I could see it then and atend G-Fest at the same time. Looks like it will seen the movie has been booked by Jd Lees. For any Godzilla fans out in California Godzilla Final Wars has been booked at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood june 24th-29th so you can catch it then.

I'm sure I forgot to mention, by the way, but maybe I did, that I saw both "Monster Zero" ("Invasion of the Astros") and "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster" projected at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood a few months ago. Two of the special effects technicians from these films were there and were very warmly greeted by a very warm and enthusiastic crowd. They both looked to be in their 70's or 80's, and the audience just loved them.

One of them shared an anecdote about how he used a jackhammer to smash a huge hole in the floor of one of Toho's stages......so that he could build a set that allowed the P1 rocket in Monster Zero to rise out of the ground. The studio ceiling was not high enough to allow the building of an elevated set, so he had to extend the set into the ground because he needed the space. He was screamed at for this by some Toho executive, and Tsuburaya was standing nearby, laughing hysterically that the technician had caused so much trouble for the purpose of getting the shot in the can.

This was probably the best time I've had at the movies in quite a while. Wow, I had always wanted to see some old Godzilla films on the big screen. Previous to this, I had only seen "Godzilla 1985" and "Godzilla 2000" on the big screen.

Gojira
03-30-2005, 05:33 PM
Filmmaker2 I think the Egyptian Theatre will be showing the new Ultraman movie and a few old Toho classics like KingKong Escapes 1967 and Matango a.k.a. Attack of the Mushroom People 1963. I think all the movies will be subtitled in english so none of the movies will be deleted. I think Henshinonline has info on june showings at the Egyptian theatre in Hollywood at http://henshinonline.com/ I have been asked to introduce the original 1954 Gojira movie for an upcoming 1950s scifi filmfest here where I live. Gojira a.k.a. Godzilla I think the audence might find what I have to say about the 1954 classic intersting and eyeopening as many movie goers and scifi/horror fans may not know the hows and whys Godzilla was made. This filmfest will take place in may at the Chamizal theatre in El Paso Texas and g
Godzilla was booked from Rialto Pictures. Yoshikazu Ishii first ast spfx director on Godzilla Final Wars will be at G-Fest this year I cant wait to meet him and the other guests.

I am in west Texas closer to California. Godzilla final Wars will be seen in june in Hollywood but I already made plans for Chicago instead. I dont think diehard Godzilla fans let distance be a factor in deciding if they can see a movie they really want to see. Most fans save a little each month and plan ahead of time on going to a movie or convention Depending on where you live classic you can check with Rialto Pictures to see where Gojira 1954 will be playing as the movie is being booked throughout the country at diffrent theatres.

Gojira
03-31-2005, 01:45 PM
Hi ClassicHorror the reason I say hi at each post is because its a courtesy. When I read a post and if someone says what was the name of the new monster in the last Godzilla movie I will reply with Hi and type the users name and say who the monster was. Or if someone talks about a movie and they get a few facts wrong again I will reply Hi and explain give the right facts. Or if someone posts that they saw a movie I will reply again with hi and I might say where other movies are playing. So I say Hi as a courtesy to the person who posted last. IMO its a good habbit to get into. Any other questions ClassicHorror?

I enjoy any appearance of Godzilla (except the old cartoons, sorry) but like the most recent cycle the most, probably because I haven't 'wore them out' yet. The 1999 to 2004 cycle did their best to reinvent Godzilla movies and inject new talent and story ideas into the series.

Also, this may be a merciless plug for my blog, but I really think it could be useful here - a guide to all the Godzilla films currently out on DVD in the US, UK and Hong Kong. Of course, they are all out in Japan, but with no english translation, subtitles or audio tracks.

I keep this entry updated with every new release.

I cant say which series was my favorite, I didnt know they were classified that way. There are some in each series I liked and some I did not. One of my favorites is Godzilla vs. Megalon. I saw it with my wife at a drive-in and we laughed our asses off. I dont know if they filmed it as a comedy or if it just turned out that way. I liked the original, I think it was the best. I dont know if this is true, but I heard they paid Raymond Burr one million dollars to be in Godzilla 1985 just for the few scenes he was in it. That was after he became famous as Perry Mason.

In 2008 Toho Studios produced the documentary Bringing Godzilla Down to Size: The Art of Japanese Special Effects.

Directed by Godzilla junkie Norman England, the documentary tells the entire story of an amazing era of Japanese SFX, begun by Eiji Tsuburaya and Yasuyuki Inoue.

Bringing Godzilla Down to Size is included on the DVD release of Rodan/War of the Gargantuas by Classic Media.

While it’s odd to find a doc about Godzilla with movies in which he makes no appearance, it is beautifully done. Narrated by Alex Cox, the doc contains plenty of interviews, including with Inoue and the members of his amazing crew.

These 2 sets will give you 16 films from the Godzilla series -

http://www.amazon.com/The-Godzilla-Collection-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ref=cm_lmf_tit_1/188-8790413-8128308

Unfortunately, a complete box set of the entire series is still unavailable because the license holder companies of several Godzilla films are different.

My own collection allows for titles Like Rodan, Mothra, King Kong Escapes, The Mysterians and over a dozen others which fall within the realm of the Godzillaverse. Can't wait for the new film from Warner/Legendary pictures.

I'm a huge Godzilla fan: curious, how many of you consider the Godzilla franchise to be horror?

Generally speaking, I put all Godzilla movies under the wide category of Horror, as they are technically 'monster movies'. They sometimes were played on Horror TV programs like Monstrous Movies, Creature Feature, etc.

Some Godzilla films have horror, sci-fi, fantasy, some were campy for kids, most a mix of genres. There's a wide variety.

Best and Worst of the Original Showa Godzilla Series:

(A member mentioned they were thinking about adding some Godzilla films to their collection. So I thought it'd be fun to post the best and worst for those who haven't seen them all. Post you best and worst as well.)

Best Showa Godzilla Films: (in rough order)

Mothra vs. Godzilla (Godzilla Vs the Thing) 1964 -- (interesting story, good pacing, pleasant sense of humor, for adults and kids)
Godzilla vs. Hedora (Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster) 1971 -- (psychedelic film, fascinating/unusual/beautiful art and visuals, jazz/psychedelic/classical music finely integrated with speaking/visuals, interesting story, good pacing, sometimes scary, almost more for adults, but ok for kids over 9 maybe)
Godzilla vs. MonsterZero 1965 -- (Staring American actor Nick Adams, very cool sci-fi film, interesting story, good pacing, pleasant sense of humor, for adults and kids)
Godzilla, King of the Monsters (US) 1956 -- (Staring US actor Raymond Burr, interesting story, good pacing, Burr does great job, fascinating visuals, special effects and music; not as gloomy and slow as Gojira, but loses some of the visceral & heavy duty effect of suffering with victims that Gijora54 has, for adults and kids)
Godzilla/Gijora (Japanese, Eng subtitles) 1954 -- (interesting story, excellent and creative visuals, effects and music; film heavy, gloomy & visceral, can be chilling, sometimes slow pacing, have you're own energy to watch it, generally not for kids.)
Ghidora the Three Headedmonster 1964 -- (amazing special effects and music, pretty good sci-fi, in spots some rather slow pacing, for adults and kids)
KingKong vs. Godzilla 1962 (US version 1963) -- (fun film, pretty good pacing, more for kids, ok for adults; US version has added parts, pretty much the same)
Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla (Cosmic Monster) 1974 -- (interesting & bizarre sci-fi, good visuals; mediocre pacing, dialogue & acting; tipping towards kids but still dark, ok for sci-fi cultural curious adults)
Destroy All Monsters 1968 -- (Excellent Sci-fi film, beautiful sets, effects, interesting story, good pacing, for adults and kids)

Worst Showa Godzilla Films: (best to worst)

Godzilla vs. Megalon 1973 -- (very campy & kiddie, but very creative monsters & some cool effects, story & pacing are decent)
Son of Godzilla 1967 -- (kiddie & campy, but interesting sci-fi story, some very good special effects)
Godzilla vs. Gigan 1972 -- (some amazingly fine visuals!, cool creature design, but story & pacing are poor)
Terror of MechaGodzilla 1975 -- (fairly campy, mostly features new monster Titanosaurus, very little MechaG, weak story, directing, acting, visuals, fighting; pacing fair. I read many liked this film... I don't get why.)
Godzilla Raids Again 1955 -- (2nd Godzilla film, 1st Godzilla fighting another monster; quick release to ride on success of Gojira 1954; so poorly received no Godzilla film would be made until 1962 King Kong Vs Godzilla.)
Godzilla vs. Eibra (the sea monster) 1966 -- (silly, rigid, hard to get into)
Godzilla's Revenge 1969 -- (completely for kids, very campy, about a boy dealing with bullies, has symbolic reference with Godzilla)

Best and Worst of the Original Showa Godzilla Series:

Sometime after our talk in the movie collection game thread I decided that I should rectify the fact that I did not own many Godzilla films. At the time, I only had the 98 version of Godzilla, which many disregard, King of Monsters which is often excluded from the films, and King Kong Versus Godzilla. I have since purchased a triple pack with Godzilla Versus Mothra: Battle for Earth, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, and Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. I also acquired the DVD Criterion Collection copy of Godzilla which included both Gojira and Godzilla: King of Monsters. In addition I purchased both Godzilla Versus Hedorah (The Smog Monster) and Godzilla Versus Gigan. While I was at it I purchased the Legacy Collection of Gamera for $9 which, I believe, included all but the most recent Gamera film. I plan to continue to expand my collection of Godzilla films in the near future. At the top of my list are Godzilla Versus Megalon, Godzilla Final Wars, the Godzilla Collection (which includes many of the films you recommended, though most are already on Netflix), and Godzilla Versus Spacegodzilla/Godzilla Versus Destroyah (it is a double feature pack). They are in no particular order. You gave an interesting list of that section of Godzilla films.

Love to hear what you think of the films after you watch each one (specifically those you haven't seen, or not seen in a very long time).

I think there are a couple of the 2000s I haven't seen, but I get some of them mixed up (which i think is unfortunately easy to do). I recently saw Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack in it's entirety (review (http://horror.com/forum/showpost.php?p=972044&postcount=2025)). I wasn't very impressed.

Godzilla Final Wars is really best for those who have seen (nearly) all of the Showa series films (also Toho films Gorath and Atragon).

I only ever saw two Godzilla movies: Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla (the one with the scientists who turned into monkeys) and the movie where Godzilla, Mothra, and another monster were fighting King Ghidorah.

I was never a big fan of those movies, but I did used to like The Return of Mothra movies that would come on the Scifi Channel. In those movies Mothra was a good guy defending the human race from giant monsters and aided by tiny singing Japanese women who I'm guessing were supposed to be like fairies (or something).

I've never seen those myself. I'd recommend Godzilla Vs the Thing (Mothra) (1964) AIP English dub. It's really in a class by itself. I can PM you a link if you need it.

While Showa is my favorite series, Godzilla vs Biollante is my favorite G movie of them all.

I know G vs The Sea Monster and Son of G are not well loved, those two are among my top favorite as well. Godzilla vs The Sea Monster was the first movie I bought on my own, at K-Mart, when I was 9.

Godzilla vs Biollante is one of my favs too. Really well made sci-fi film.
Sea Monster and Son are campy fun. The budget was quite low for Sea, and that showed. The original story had King Kong in it, but was picked up by Toho who replaced it with Godzilla.

I seem to remember watching Godzilla Vs Megalon with my folks on primetime TV one year. That was exciting, as that was the only time, besides seeing G Vs King King on primetime.

Yes he did. ::big grin:: I thought the movie was fun. Especially for those who saw most of the Godzilla films plus Atragon and Gorath, it was a kick to see all those elements weaved together. And then to watch Godzilla battle every monster? I'll take that. I even liked the 'The Matrix copy' karate parts of the film; with it's modern Hollywood camera shots.

Godzilla vs Megalon NBC primetime TV premiere with John Belushi
I happened upon this, speaking of G Vs Megalon and being on primetime TV. My memory is confirmed.

Yeah, you know we should do a viewing party for it.

Hmm... for Amazon Prime GvM reads, "This video is currently unavailable to watch in your location". weird. I guess it means USA? I'm sure we can find an internet stream somewhere.

When I do an internet film-party with friends we use Steam audio chat. The text only feature for most tele-parties isn't quite enough for me. But also, I watch movies with friends who know when to talk, like not over dialogue. You don't happen to have Steam installed, do ya? If not, there's probably another voice chat a group could use.
